Liguria-based hiking group

by vidlothian

If you stumble upon Liguria and fancy joining a hiking group, we (that is, some expats and I) founded one last autumn. Needless to say, it's free. Hike locations can span from Savona to Portovenere/Sarzana and may vary in difficulty and length, but they're generally easy and don't go beyond 5 hours. If you're interested, you may find us by pointing your browser to http://liguriah.wordpress.com/about

Swimming in polluted waters

by globetrott

There are plenty of rocks that make it almost impossible to take a bath - and bathing is also forbidden by law because of the pollution of the water. But nobody seem to care a lot and they have small places - like here on the pic in Nervi - where you may at least take a sunbath and have changing cabins. In the background you see the coastline leading towards the Cinque terre and in the Middle of the pic the Rosary. You may click here for a map of Nervi :www.multimap.com - Nervi Changing-cabins are found all over the coast, as nobody seem to care a lot about the polluted sea along the Ligurian coast

Scuba Diving!

by diver-x

We did not realize that scuba diving was a very popular activity around Cinque Terre. Not only that, but the water around the Cinque Terre is a marine sanctuary! We picked up several brochures from local dive operators. But it being October, it was off-season and nobody was actually diving. Apparently they think it is too cold (that and the water was very choppy). Funny, if the water was that warm at home, we'd be underwater in a second! Saw lots of local underwater photos and it looks like great diving. I definitely want to go back during high season to check it out!

Paragliding in Monterosso al mare

by globetrott

Paragliding is possible only in Monterosso al Mare, because there you have the combination of steep mountains and a great sandy beach for a smooth landing, while all the other villages in the Cinque terre have the terraces of the vinyards and plenty of rocks only. There will be places, where you may rent the equipment or simply bring your own.The places to start are mostly up in the mountains, at the places where cars could park easily.

Hiking in Cinque terre

by globetrott

The hiking-path between the 5 villages is part of the " Cinque Terre National Park " and you have to pay an entrance-fee, when you want to go that path.Only the part of the path going through the villages is free of charge, for the rest they charge you 3,5 €uro for the day-ticket .When you see the sign like on my picture, the ticket-control is just about 100 meters ahead. This fee will be included already in your train-day-ticket for 5terre !NO DOGS ALLOWED on the path !! Good hiking-shoes are essential and the hike is not advisable for elderly people, as the pavement is not always as easy and smooth like on my picture.

Sailing in Liguria and beyond

by globetrott

I may highly recommend to stroll through the Marina of any village along the Ligurian coast. You will see a big number of unique sailing-yachts, like the Katamaran on my picture - big enough for my dream to sail around the world one day...Obviously the Marinas are open to all visitors, as nobody chased me away.Genua, Chiavari and Lavagna were the marinas where I spent a lot of time just walking aound and searching for great yachts and sailing-boats. When you intend to go sailing in Italy - it will be the best to contact Paolo (VT-member utttz) - he has all the informations and is passionate and active sailor himself.

climbing down the stream

by utttz

it's quite simple... you chose a small stream and you climb it downstream, lerca river is great, you spend most of the time in a really narrow and deep canion the same you use to climb up a mountain with the "only" difference you spend most of your time in the water, so a scuba suit will be useful if it's not a really hot day.

sailing

by utttz

it's quite easy to find a "rent a boat" facility in liguria... My preferred one is in Sestri Levante, open all the summer. une of the instructor, the fabolous bonelli able to speak genoese, english and chinese at tigullio sails you can only rent small boats, and they have all the equipment you need... if you want to buy something, apelodacqua, in the harbour of chiavari is the place!

Liguria offers quite a lot of sports. Go hiking and when you return, take a bath in the sea and relax on the beach! There are lots of possibilities to play tennis, for sailing, and for cycling!
