The train station at La Spezia by diver-x From La Spezia, the first train stop of the Cinque Terre is Riomaggiore. At the La Spezia train station, there is a tourist office with all the information you need for your Cinque Terre hike. The Cinque Terre is now part of the Italian national park system, so you have to pay to hike it. At the tourist office you can buy one ticket that covers your rail fare (unlimited between La Spezia and Genova) and your hiking pass. The ticket costs 5.20 Euro for one day. You can also buy a pass that covers you for 3 or 7 days. Make sure you validate your ticket at one of the little yellow machines at the train stations. They don't check for validation on the train (as far as I could tell), but they do check it at the hiking checkpoints at the outskirts of each village. Don't lose your ticket! At the La Spezia train station, there is also a snack bar where you can pick up snacks and sports drinks or water for your hike. Keep yourself hydrated! Leave a Comment Address: Liguria coastline

Manarola in Cinque terre by globetrott Manarola is another one of the 5 villages of Cinque terre and a lot more off the beaten path than Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Ships have a hard time to land in the small port and even the smallest spot seems to be used in order to build a house and most of the buildings became rather high that way. My ship did not land in Manarola, although it was scheduled that it would. But obviously whenever a big group of people reserve the boat, even the scheduled boat goes for the wishes of the group only. You may take the path along the coast and through the mountain-terraces - it is called Via dell'amore Here you may see Manarola on a map : www.multimap.com - Manarola Leave a Comment

Monterosso al Mare is the ONLY of the villages in Cinque terre with a sandy beach... ...a bit less romantic than the other 4 villages of Cinque terre ! But it is a lovely place anyway with great old houses and a wonderful, rather wide beach-boulevard . And it offers a big parking directely on the beach , in case that you would like to go there with your own car . Monterosso is the very first of the 5 villages that you get to , when arriving by train . It certainly makes sense to start your walk through 5terre in Monterosso walking to Vernazza and all the other villages and you will emerge deeper and deeper , step by step into the different world of these remote villages. Sestri Levante is a perfect place for a daytrip no matter, where you stay on the ligurian coast. Baia del Silenzio / Silence bay and Baia delle Favole / Bay of farietales are the most famous bays there with a nice beach and lots of hotels around the bay. At night the whole bay is beautifully lighted and looks really romantic. Baia delle Favole ( Bay of fairy-tales ) has a seperate and mostly quite wide boulevard with big palmtrees, benches and playgrounds for the kids, and lots of hotels facing the beach. And when you are lucky, you may park your car directely there. Baia del Favole was called that way by Hans Christian Andersen, the great danish author, who came to Sestri Levante for a vacation. Portovenere is a small town west of La Specia, where plenty of cruises will start to the area of Cinque terre But also the town itself is worth a visit with its old church of San Pietro, that you will pass by, when cruising for Cinque terre. The old church of San Pietro dates back to the 12th century and the arches of the nearby fortress-walls offer a great view over the Cinque terre Coastline. To explore Portovenere you will need half a day and you may combine it with the town of La Spezia or maybe with the 5terre. It is the best to go to Portovenere by train, as parking there is quite expensive ( depending on the distance to the port and free parkings are in a distance of about 3 km) When you click here, you may see on a map where to find Portovenere : www.multimap.com - Portovenere For more infos and pics - please click on my link below ! Vernazza is the most beautiful village of the so called " Cinque terre " Lots of colorfull houses, all built into a small and narrow bay. Fisherboats, a narrow path leading through the terraces on the hills taking you to the next village Monterosso... I drove by car to Portovenere and from there I made a daycruise to the Cinque Terre. The ship stayed in Vernazza for 60 minutes - time enough for for first overview, but not enough to explore everything... Taking the train is certainly the best, as you may buy a dayticket for all of the villages of 5terre, including the train to and between all villages, the small buses that run through some of them and the entrance-fee to the National Park and "Via dell Amore" - the romantic path along the coastline up and down the hills... You may click here to see on the map, where to find Vernazza : www.multimap.com - Vernazza For more infos and pics of Vernazza - just click on my link below ! Leave a Comment

Camogli and S.Maria Assunta by globetrott The church at the end of the promenade is called Santa Maria Assunta and dates back to the 12th century . It is famous for its interior, richly decorated with paintings and a lot of golden ornaments. Unfortunately I was there on a sunday during church-service and taking photographs inside was not possible. Also the lanterns at the beach are really great and make a perfect picture in combination with the church. Leave a Comment

This is one of the best places for a pic of the promenade in Camogli. Click on the pic and you will see two huge trees bending dangerously over the promenade. When you get closer to this place in reality, you will see, the trees are fixed - for security reasons - with 2 strong iron-ropes. It is kind of dangerous anyway, and a part of the wall, holding the roots of the tree is broken already... ...so hurry up to see it, before this is gone forever. When you click on my picture , you may see the lovely church Santa Maria Assunta in the back. Leave a Comment

Portofino is one of the most expensive places you may go in Italy as a tourist... GO there ANYWAY !! Look at this lovely bay, seen from the castle ! Portofino was already a village in the times of the roman empire, as it was a great strategic place and a great and safe port - hidden for enemies and easy to watch out for dangerous ships approaching. In the 1950s and 1960s the international Jet Set found an exclusive and remote place in Portofino. During my visit there was an exhibition of old black&white pics of Hollywood celibrities beeing on holiday in Portofino in the 1950s and 1960s. Well, most of them left and were searching for different places... ...BUT the high prizes STAYED in Portofino!!!
