CINQUETERRE - VERNAZZA

by white_smallstar

VERNAZZA My favourite village from each point of view.Approaching it, walking along the SENTIERO AZZURRO, it is easy to recognise its shape, a promontory slung on the sea while a tower looks out the blue deep water . Agaves and prickly pears frame the view. There is a tiny sandy beach right on the city centre “sheltered” by the Chiesa di Santa Margherita (1318) and some little cafes.A stroll along its narrow lanes will reveal some nice faded houses or some old stone walls. Impossible to not love it!

CINQUETERRE - CORNIGLIA

by white_smallstar

CORNIGLIA That is the central hamlet among the quintet of Cinque terre villages whose feature is not having a direct access to the sea. Odd enough, but Corniglia is located just atop a rocky promontory , so in a more secure position compared to the other villages.A stroll around its narrows streets will lead you through cobbled alleys surrounded by stone walls and arches that connect houses each others.

CINQUETERRE - MANAROLA

by white_smallstar

MANAROLA Surrounded by the sea on one side and by vineyards on the opposite side , Manarola is another charming village which is very nice illuminated by the light at sunset or dawn. There is a small rocky beach at the end of the village, and a cobbled beach between Manarola and Corniglia if you would like to have a rest sunbathing or swimming.

CINQUETERRE - RIOMAGGIORE

by white_smallstar

RIOMAGGIORE is the easternmost and the largest among the five coastal villages. Its tall and different colored houses attached to each other and built under a rock overlooking the open sea , is a unique feature in this area. In spite of it, and of crowds of people year-round, the hamlet has retained most of its old charm. Fishing boats are still parked in the tiny square close to the sea, clothes are hung from the windows waiting to get dry on their own, steep paths meandering through vineyards and go to the top of the hills, olive groves cover the slopes of mountains behind the village….according to me it is an enchanting hamlet, a bit out of time! But so lovely!Anyway, this is only the first one among the 5 villages and we have to go discover the others. The path called SENTIERO AZZURRO which links all the five villages starts (or finishes) right here.SO LET’S GO!

Living Five Lands and some places around

by microsensazione

Hi!I visited "Five Lands" two years ago. "Five Lands" is used to aggregate in one name all the five small villages in this part of awesome coast of Liguria Region: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. You could say "this part of the trip is still a bit of a mystery right now" so I suggest you first of all to dedicate more than one day in that area because, not so far from 5T, there are also some places must be visited as well as Camogli, San Fruttuoso (reachable only by boat), Portofino and Portovenere. In case you have a car I suggest to leave it in your hotel and use only trains, boats and......feet!TRAINS: you can check all train time tables and sometimes buy tickets on web site:http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.htmlTwo years ago, I dedicated a total of three days there taking an apartment as base where to sleep in Deiva Marina.About APARTMENT in Deiva...

PORTOFINO

by globetrott

Portofino is one of the most expensive places you may go in Italy as a tourist...GO there ANYWAY !!Look at this lovely bay, seen from the castle !Portofino was already a village in the times of the roman empire, as it was a great strategic place and a great and safe port - hidden for enemies and easy to watch out for dangerous ships approaching. In the 1950s and 1960s the international Jet Set found an exclusive and remote place in Portofino.During my visit there was an exhibition of old black&white pics of Hollywood celibrities beeing on holiday in Portofino in the 1950s and 1960s.Well, most of them left and were searching for different places......BUT the high prizes STAYED in Portofino!!!Please click here in order to see a zoomable map of Portofino : www.multimap.com - PortofinoPlease click here for more infos and pics about Portofino !

CAMOGLI - the beach boulevard

by globetrott

This is one of the best places for a pic of the promenade in Camogli.Click on the pic and you will see two huge trees bending dangerously over the promenade. When you get closer to this place in reality, you will see, the trees are fixed - for security reasons - with 2 strong iron-ropes.It is kind of dangerous anyway, and a part of the wall, holding the roots of the tree is broken already......so hurry up to see it, before this is gone forever. When you click on my picture , you may see the lovely church Santa Maria Assunta in the back.

CAMOGLI - Santa Maria Assunta

by globetrott

The church at the end of the promenade is called Santa Maria Assunta and dates back to the 12th century .It is famous for its interior, richly decorated with paintings and a lot of golden ornaments.Unfortunately I was there on a sunday during church-service and taking photographs inside was not possible. Also the lanterns at the beach are really great and make a perfect picture in combination with the church.

5-TERRE > Monterosso al Mare

by globetrott

Monterosso al Mare is the ONLY of the villages in Cinque terre with a sandy beach......a bit less romantic than the other 4 villages of Cinque terre ! But it is a lovely place anyway with great old houses and a wonderful, rather wide beach-boulevard .And it offers a big parking directely on the beach , in case that you would like to go there with your own car .Monterosso is the very first of the 5 villages that you get to , when arriving by train .It certainly makes sense to start your walk through 5terre in Monterosso walking to Vernazza and all the other villages and you will emerge deeper and deeper , step by step into the different world of these remote villages. You may click here in order to see where to find Monterosso al Mare on the map :www.multimap.com - Monterosso al MareFor more infos and pics about Monterosso al Mare - please click on the link below !
