Lerici is a lovely seaside town. Shelley is said to have drowned here whilst swimming across the bay. Indeed the area is known as the Gulf of Poets......its easy to see why Poets would be inspires hee too with such lovely scenery.

It is really a pity, the building was under restauration and partly covered when I visited Genova last time.Bombs had destroyed the old theatre in 1943 and so the building had to be restored and was finished 1990.2000 people will be able to sit inside the audience, the walls of which are built like houses, shops etc and might make a great extra feature in combination with the stage !Walk behind the theatre and you will get to Galleria Mazzini, a covered shopping-gallery with great chandeliers and nice cafes.

The interior of San Lorenzo is really great and you will need at least 30 minutes to see the most important parts of it.This golden bird in the fore-ground will hold the priest's book during the church service, as this bird is also the symbol of one of the 4 evangelists......and take a look at the great mosaiques around the main altar. You may enter the cathedral during the day freely and without any restrictions , only during the service a touristical visit is of course not possible.

It is almost impossible to get the whole Cattedrale San Lorenzo on a picture, as the square in front of it is rather small. But also on my picture you may see the very typical way it was built by marble in different colors.Click on my picture in order to see the great ornaments around the 3 entrance-gates and the big lions on the left and the right of the entrance.

Palazzo Ducale dates back to the year 1591 - but it burned down and was rebuilt again in 1778 and got a fassade of that time.Today it is used as a multi-cultural centre with plenty of changing exhibitions. You may walk freely into the hall and will see these great courts with plenty of columns.Do not be afraid to climb up to the different floors. There is a ticket-office on the groundfloor, selling the tickets for the art-exhibition inside a very small part of the Palazzo. But all the rest may be visited freely, including a great restaurant on top of the building, and you will even have a lift taking you up there to the 4th floor

Piazza de Ferrari is certainly the most beautiful square in Genua with this great fountain in the middle and Via XX Settembre - the main shopping-street of Genua / Genova ending here on the left of my pic. This fountain is also a great place to meet, as it is easy to find and while waiting you may refresh a bit in the hot summer on the Ligurian coast. And not on my pic, but also on the same square :Accademia LinguisticaTeatro Carlo FelicePalazzo Ducale

Vernazza is many peoples favorite village, dominated by the Round Tower and by the ruins of the medieval fortifications. It has a small harbor next to the village squareAnd it is, in my opinion, the most graceful town among the five. It's nice to walk in those narrow street looking around and eating focaccia...you shouldn't miss it!!!

Riomaggiore is a nice town to stay. We chose an hotel here and it was really nice.A very nice thing is that you have to park your car in a parking place at the entrance of the town. Thus you can walk safely all around...

This is an unexpected surprise when visiting this little hamlet on the hill. What a beautiful cave! The highlight of your visit to this cave will be the still, transparent lake 800 meters within the mountain.Guided visits October 1 - April 30: 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PMGuided visits from May 1 - September 30: 9:30 AM, 11:45 AM, 3:00 PM, 5:45 PMClosed Mondays, Christmas, and New Year's DayThe tour takes 50-60 minutes and the constant temperature inside the grotto is 16C (61F)

It's a bit steep, but you'll end up in the center of the village on the hill. You might be the only ones in the square, as it's a really small town. The church is not always open, but it's nice to sit on the steps in front of the church and enjoy the view and tranquility.
