Explore something that few others do

by wadekorzan

Just near the town of Finale Liguria, there is a little town along the coast known as Borgio-Verezzi. Be sure to turn off the road, drive through the small modern town and head up the hill into the medieval town of Borgio. You'll have to park your car just outside the main part of the old town, because most of the streets are about 1 meter wide and no cars are allowed. I really felt like I was stepping back in time and it was just so beautiful. Best of all, this being the town from where my friend Leo's ancestors come, it seemed that his family history was all over--in the streets, the church, the cemetary. Aside from this, this is a place anyone can enjoy for a peaceful moment away from the traffic and crowds along the coast.

Riomaggiore

by sandysmith

The village of Riomaggiore is named after the brook (Rio) which flows through a deep winding gully down to a small beach. The path linking Manorola with Riomaggiore is known as the "Way of Love" and is very evocative because it is sunk in the rocks falling sheer to the sea. - a very romantic walk to make.

Manorola

by sandysmith

Manorola a very colourful village, is situated in a narrow valley and the sides of the hills are planted with vines producing the wine called Sciacchetra (means press and pull).I loved this view of the pastel coloured houses all higgledy-piddaly on the cliff face in the afternoon sun.

Corniglia

by sandysmith

Corniglia is the only village of the Cinque Terre situated on a hillock planted with vines and olive groves. This tends to be the least touristic trap of the 5 villages - not many venture up here and it is so unspoilt . Looks as if it has not changed for centuries. In this area underwater fishing is very popularCorniglia was often celebrated in the works of Boccaccio's and Carducci'sbecause of its excellent wine - the Vernaaccia. A steep flight of steps leads down to Manorola - our next sto on the hike. I think the path to Corniglia form Vernazza is the hardest but the most scenic - it certainly had stunning views.

Vernazza

by sandysmith

Vernazza is an old and picturesque village with long fishing traditions. It faces a bay dominated by cliffs and 2 ancient towers. It still has medieval features and the main square is surrounded by many coloured houses built on the rocks. The small beach at Vernazza is dominated by the church of St Maria of Antioch built 1318 in gothic-ligure style.

Monterrosso

by sandysmith

Monterrosso is the main village of the Cinque Terre - there are still some old houses but hotels, modern bathing huts and tourists now predominate. The village is situated between 2 inlets both covered with houses, olive groves, lemon trees, vines and ending in with sands. This is the view of Monterosso looking back as we started on the hike to Riomaggiore. First stop though is Vernazza.

Portovenere's gothic church

by sandysmith

Portovenere's gothic church of St. Pietro is quite unusual with its black and white front at the end of the promontory. It has delightful view over the sea. At the foot of the promontory is Byron's Grotto - said to be where the poet took refuge during his stays in the area.
