To the left and the right of the Piazza Marconi and the main street leading to the upper town you will find these small alleys (carruggi) and steps leading from one alley to the next like in a labyrinth! It is enjoyable exploring them - plus it is nice and cool even during the summer heat!
From the Piazza Marconi by the harbour, and from Vernazza’s main street, characteristic alleys known as carugi wind and climb between the houses. For me these were one of the delights of the town. Around every turn there is an interesting detail to catch the eye and to photograph – a small shrine, an ancient door, a colourful window-box or flower pot. As cat lovers we especially liked this cute door-bell!
Now and then you will catch glimpses of daily life in the town, as locals go about their business or stop to gossip in a doorway. And look out too for snatched opportunities to look back down on the more bustling scenes below, around the harbour and along the busy main street.
