    The Castello

At the tip of Vernazza, the "castle of loud screams" looks over the Ligurian Sea stretching to the horizon. The castello received this name for the warnings shouted from the tower alerting Vernazza's inhabitants of invasion at a time when pirates ruled the seas. While the threat of pirate attacks has vanished, the castle still provides wonderful view of Vernazza and its tiny harbor, as well as a break taking panorama of the sea. Climb the tower at the edge of town for 1 euro. Closed Tuesday.

On the point in Vernazza is an old Forte overlooking the town and harbour.

To get to the forte it is a steep climb up from the main square - lots of steps winding up between buildings.

Once there, you can climb to the top of the Forte for great views and photos.

It costs around 1 to 2 euros to enter.

    The Castle / Watchtower

Sitting on a rocky promontory above Vernazza are remains of the Doria family castle, including a circular watchtower, quite useful at a time when pirates were regularly raiding Mediterranean villages. Reaching the tower requires quite a bit of steep stair-climbing, a bit of a feat for some of us older folks. It was well worth the trek, however, as the fresh breeze and the magnificent views encouraged us to linger a while.

Photos here are dedicated to the tower itself; a second tip will provide views from the tower.
