What’s that green wreath in autumn?

by Trekki

Whenever you are travelling through Italy during the months of November, you will definitely come across groups of young people, elegantly dressed, where one or more wears a green wreath on the head. Obviously this is a kind of celebration and when I was in Siena (Nov. 2011), one of my teachers explained me what was going on: these are the celebrations after having finished university – Laurea. And the wreaths are what the newly graduates get, together with flowers and other gifts. The wreath is said to symbolise wisdom. A cute custom I think.© Ingrid D., March 2011.

The Locals and Language

by JBOO46

I found the locals in Italy to be very friendly and willing to assist or lend a hand when needed. I found that, when I needed directions or help, I could almost always find it (and a great majority of the locals also speak English). However, I found that it is common courtesy to at least ATTEMPT speaking the local language when asking for help, don't automatically assume anyone speaks English. These simple phrases helped me out greatly - "Scusi/Me Despiache, non parlo Italiano. Parla Inglese?" (Excuse me/I'm sorry, I do not speak Italian, do you speak English?), "Grazi" (Thank you), "Buongiorno" (Good Morning), "Prego" (you're welcome) and "Per Favore" (Please). One time, we had a taxi driver who did not speak English, but my brother and I, who had each taken 6 years of Spanish, accidentally slipped a few Spanish words in when trying to communicate (very roughly) in Italian. The taxi...

Waiters or waitress: tip or not tip in Italy?

by microsensazione

Tip or not tip?I'm Italian (so, often, I'm also a tourist in Italy!!!) and I can say I become angry and "put a bad cross" on a bar, restaurant, pizzeria and so on when I see:bill + "coperto" + serviceThat's a bad custom against tourists used in my Country (not everywhere is used in Italy) and I'd like to erase it definitely!!!I know sometimes "service" is the 10% of the bill and used by the boss to pay the waiter/waitress. If so, the "money hungry" and dishonest waiter/waitress is encouraged to make you spend as more as possible. Is it a good approach? I think it is deplorable: that's quantity, not quality!And......please could somebody explain me why around my region there is only "coperto", in some Centre of Italy areas "coperto + service" and, for example in Salento (south of Apulia), nor "coperto" nor "service"???I stop here... Sorry about this my vent...Well, tip or not tip?I'd...

Saluting culture in spain

by Windsailor

In Spain, when saying hello or saluting people, it is customary to shake hands if the people you salute are not friends or relatives. Friends and relatives are saluted by shaking hands between men, kissing on the cheek between women & between women and men. Younger people, if they do or do not know each other, might kiss eachother on the cheek except between men. Kissing on the cheek between men is seldom seen, and it is not customary in Spain. Younger people seldom salute otherwise than sayin "hola", hello in English. Older people usually salute saying "hola" if not in family when kisses on the cheek are customary. There are regional variations to this, sometimes four kisses are given to both cheeks, sometimes only three.

Hours of Operation

by nmeade09

Be aware that while in Italy the hours of operation are a little different from the U.S. In Italy, stores open in the morning around 9 o'clock and close around 7pm. During the day, the stores will close from 1pm to 4pm for a break. I didn't get to shop much because I always waited too late. However, some stores do stay open later. Usually in areas that cater to tourists

I'll put the link down here :-)

Praying at the chapel, Vatican City

by hopang

The chapel inside St. Peter's Basilica can be visited by locals, members of the public and foreign tourists. However when we visit a chapel inside St. Peter's Basilica especially the Chapel of the Choir which is located near the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica, we have to take off our hats or caps, keep silent or keep our voice down to show respect to the chapel and to the locals and foreign visitors who pray in silence in the chapel. Dress code also applies for entering the chapel as well as St. Peter's Basilica, i.e. no shorts for both the gentlemen and the ladies and no mini skirts for the ladies. Nevertheless we could not remember whether photography and video recording is permitted inside the chapel!

Where's the bathroom?

by goodfish

If you're a first-timer to The Boot, public washroom facilities will be an adventure. I'd read beforehand that a good rule of thumb is to always "go" just before you leave your hotel to avoid having to find or use a public potty as long as possible. They really aren't all that bad, once you get used to them, although there were a couple that got the better of me. Don't expect the luxury of toilet seats, TP or soap, and pack along wet wipes, tissue and hand sanitizer. Some have attendants who require throwing some change (usually around .50 euro) in their basket to gain entry so always have a few small coins in your pocket. Flushing is usually accomplished by pressing a panel on the wall above the commode. The photo above was taken at the Vatican and was (thankfully) the only one of this type that I encountered. Having spent enough time in the woods to know what was expected, it was still...

Italian bars

by goodfish

Having coffee or a drink in an Italian bar/cafe involved a few amusing, cultural differences. Either one is less expensive if consumed standing up. Take a seat at a table and start adding euros to the cost of that latte or beer. Why? Tables are usually covered with a cloth that involves changing and laundering between guests. Also - and as you can see from the picture - our table orders of beer/wine automatically came with 3-4 lovely little side dishes of snacks such as chips, olives, peanuts and small pastries. Sometimes there are outdoor benches that you're allowed to use without paying extra (see second picture) but ask. If sitting, tipping the waiter/waitress is still a nice thing to do, regardless of the service cost. Where a "bar" in the US is a grown-up place for drinking alcohol, in Italy they're primarily coffee shops and many carry Italian sodas, small snacks and pastries as...
