Ordering water at a restaurant

by nyonnetti

Despite the fact that Italy has very safe drinking water, you will never get tap when you order water at a restaurant. By tap I mean, they will not bring you a free glass of water. In general we were brought a (cold) 1 liter bottle of water and were charged anywhere from 2-4 Euros for this. If you don't finish it, you are free to take it with you. Also as a side note, when you order water, they may by default bring you sparkling water, or seltzer. So it is good to ask for "no gas," if you want plain water.

Festa della Repubblica (2nd June)

by Mikebond

June 2nd is the Republic Day in Italia. It is a public holidays to commemorate the 2nd June 1946, when Italians chose, by referendum, they wanted to be a republic rather than to remain a monarchy. The difference between the votes in favour of the republic and those in favour of the monarchy was very tiny: 12,718,641 to 10,718,502 (I've got this figures here), that is only 2 million votes. The result was contested because three million Italians could not vote, including the citizens of Trieste, Gorizia and Bolzano. Most voters living in Northern Italia expressed themselves in favour of the republic, while most Southern Italians voted for the monarchy. The Republic Day was restored as a public holiday by President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in 1999 or 2000. The celebration consists in a parade of the armed forces and speeches by the high offices of State. Most Italians like this...

Water Fountains

by SJTravel

There are water fountains almost everywhere in Italy (even one in Basillica di San Pietro (even though it is technically Vatican City, not Italy. It was right next to the queue to go into the Cuppola or the Grottoes). They are good for refilling your water bottles as you are walking around the cities. In some cities, you will come across them more often than others. Sometimes, the fountains are constantly running and sometimes, you have to turn them on. I was skeptical to use them at first, but I read in a couple travel books about how the water is safe and sometimes comes from some really nice springs. When I first saw one, I wasn't sure whether or not to use one but then I saw a ton of local people using them so I did. And I saved so much money on water during my entire trip. I would just keep refilling my bottle whenever I saw a fountain. They are really all over the place, you just...

Language

by mileslunn

Compared to most Western European countries, knowledge of a second language is quite low in Italy so although English is widely understood in the tourist areas, it is not widely spoken elsewhere so knowing some Italian can be very helpful. The good news is Italians are not picky about pronounciation so you can speak it horribly and they will still understand.

Hair

by craic

You would have thought I would have noticed this having struggled with wild untameable hair all my life. But I didn't. My daughter noticed it first as we were walking through the streets of Rome."That policewoman hasn't got her hair tied back," she hissed at me. And sure enough the hair on that cop was doing its own thing. Like my hair - and my daughter's hair - would like to do if we gave it a chance."It looks great," said the daughter. "Maybe I will let it do that when I get back to Australia."But of course she didn't, because it is not the fashion. While my mother and sister were visiting, my mother got sick so we took her along to the pronto soccorso. (That was fine by the way, we got excellent, prompt attention.) My sister is also plagued with the family hair. (I blame our Italian great-grandmother, but you think the genes, and the hair, would have thinned down by now.)And my sister...

In my experience - this is just my experience -

by craic

Italians do not tend to invite you into their homes. They arrange to meet you at a cafe or a restaurant. So I felt honoured when my Italian friends invited us to dinner at their place.I dithered about the gift to bring. In Australia a bottle or two of wine is just the thing. In the end I bought small gifts of chocolate and marmelade in the Cinqueterre to give to them. These were put aside and nearly not unwrapped while we were there. Maybe I had errred bringing a gift at all.The dinner was very splendid and formal. The row of glasses and the ranks of cutlery and the fine napery. Afterwards I said to my crew oh alas - when they visit Australia and we invite them to dinner they are just going to have to go along with the way we do things. Because I don't have that sort of cutlery and napery.Anyway - the drinks before dinner were very abstemious. The drinks during dinner were very...

No Doggie Bags in Italy

by DueSer

If you can't finish your meal in Italy (something that is VERY likely to happen, meals are huge in Italy!), don't plan on asking for the leftovers wrapped up to take with you. As is the case in a lot of Europe, wanting to take your extras home with you is considered a sign that you're poor (in other words, "Why do you need to take this food home with you? Don't you have any food at home?"). It's gauche, just don't do it.

The bidet

by craic

As you are traveling in Italy you are bound to come upon the bidet. It is usually placed next to your lavatory. It is for washing your nether regions. Apparently. (Although I have heard it makes a good foot bath too.) One straddles it (apparently) facing the wall, after one has adjusted the water flow and temperature. And bingo. One is nice to be near. It is great (apparently) for before, after or indeed instead of!I have never used one so do let me know how it goes for you. When I had a question posted on VT before I went to Italy (it was a serious question, like for instance it was quite a new thought to me to FACE the wall) once the fun had died down a few European members came on suggesting that anyone who didn't use a bidet was a filthy, filthy person. And maybe we are.But I found a really good use for my bidet in my tiny bathroom in Rome. I used it as a dirty washing hamper.

Small plastic packets by your pillow in hotels

by JBourne

No these are not condoms, although they look rather similar. They are in fact mozzie repellent impregnated (no pun intended) slips of cardboard that you put into a plug which you should find elsewhere in the room. When you plug it in a switch it on it releases a scent that mozzies apparently hate.
