The Grom chain has many ice-cream shops in Italy and some in other countries too.
It has many flavours available, 'flavours of the month', sorbets, granita...cono (cones...small, medium, large) or coppa (cup).
And yes, it is hugely popular, as proved by the queues outside the door whenever I passed by the Bergamo branch in the early evening.
I certainly enjoyed my Grom cone (s) although I have not yet tasted an Italian ice-cream I have not enjoyed. Look for the word 'artigianale'...it means home-made.

A quick bite was required, and this pizza place was on my route back to the hotel.
I wanted a tranchi (a slice of pizza) and a beer, and that was just what I had. Beer was draught (alla spina), which is always nicest imo, and the pizza was absolutely fine. There were several choices of toppings.
It's very much a fast food place, so plate was paper, cup was plastic. But there are a few seats outside and it filled the required gap.
The grump? O, that was the chap who was serving. An elderly man and one whom, I suspect, does not much enjoy his job. He wasn't actually rude but was clearly not in the mood to be pleasant.
A cheap place to fill up with perfectly acceptable food.

This little bar/cafe inside a really rather superbly twiddly mansion was tucked away immediately behind my hotel and I stopped there more than once for a restorative beer (draught...alla spina) and espresso).
It's obviously very popular with locals, especially those on their way to or from the station after work.
I was struck by the friendliness of the staff, and by the chattiness of the customers. Not so much to me (my Italian is simply not good enough) but it was very clear that lots of them knew each other.
Just a really nice place to have a relaxing drink.

Finding cafes/bars whch offered free wifi in Bergamo was not easy but I did come across this place. Inevitably, I came across it when I did not have my netbook with me, but I'll definitely try it out next time.
I did have an aperitivo there though (a very nice glass of Prosecco) and was very impressed by the 'nibbles' which accompanied it (see photo). Providing nibbles is a Milanese custom (I believe) and I was pleased to find that it had spread to Bergamo.
Service was courteous and pleasant. There are tables outside as well as a bar area inside, and a 'dining room' on the first floor.
It's well sited in Largo Maestro Gavazzeni, near Largo Porta Nuova and ideal for a rest during your passeggiata around the Sentierione. It's screened a little from the traffic by small conifers in pots, which is a nice touch.

While I was in Padova (Padua) a few years ago, I discovered Grom, and very quickly became addicted to their Ice creams!
In October 2008, I visited Bergamo. On the way back to the airport I was surprised to see a Grom shop from the bus window - Aaaargh!!!! I'd missed out!
So, when I booked this trip for April 09, I was pleased to see that our hotel was only a few metres from this Gelateria. I only managed to sample 3 ice creams while I was here this time, but they were all scrummy!
My first ice cream in a cone was Limone, - Mmmmmmm, just the right balance of sweetness and bitterness. The ingredients are all seasonal, so from April to October, Amalfi Sfusato lemons are used. The lemon juice is extracted by hand, to ensure no bitter pith is included.
November to March, Sicillian Verdello lemons are used in making the ice cream.
Next day, I was tempted by the Extra Noir chocolate, which was a delicious sorbet. I was surprised to find that there was no cream or milk used in the recipe (as it tasted so creamy) just organic Bolivian cocoa, pure mountain water and white cane sugar are used.
On our last day, all 7 of us headed for Grom, and kept the very patient assistant busy, as we selected our choices. (pic 2)
I decided to try something different, and deliberately selected one that I couldn't translate. I was very pleased to find that I'd chosen ginger! I love ginger!
The assistant suggested I had this with a scoop of chocolate ice cream - it went perfectly with the Extra Noir chocolate. (pic 3)
Ice cream can be purchased in cones or tubs. I had a small cone each time -2.20 euros for up to 2 scoops of ice cream.
Since I first discovered Grom in Padova, more branches have opened. I hadn't realised until I checked the website that there were branches in Venice and Treviso now (I'd walked near to one of the shops in Venice during my Christmas visit, without knowing it was there) Perhaps it was as well that I didn't know, or I'd have eaten my own body weight in ice cream!
As they are all made from high quality ingredients, and taste so wonderful, I tend to think that it's 'Health food' and is doing me good!!
Check out the informative web site for more info!!
Branches of Grom
Torino • Milano • New York • Parigi • Tokyo • Venezia • Firenze • Bergamo • Bologna • Genova • Sanremo • Ferrara • Mantova • Mestre • Trieste • Chioggia • Novara • Padova • Parma • Perugia • Treviso • Asti • Cuneo • Chieri • Casale
I'm waiting for a UK branch!!!!!!
Favorite Dish: I've thoroughly enjoyed each of the flavours that I've tried here in Bergamo, and Padova.
Check out the website for flavours and ingredients and enjoy a 'Virtual Ice Cream'!
If I had to choose my 'Death Row'/Last ever meal- A Grom Ice cream would be my Dessert choice!!!
Okay-so I've decided-Limone belongs to Padova- The flavour reminds me of my time spent here, and whenever I think of Padua, it's not long before I start salivating, remembering my Limone experience.
So Bergamo Grom is the Extra Noir chocolate and Ginger! Mmmmm-smooth and spicy-hot and cold- a taste of 2 Ice creams/ a taste of 2 cities!

The restaurant "DA MIMMO" is located in an ancient palace built in 1357 by the architech Baldoino Suardi and it was known as the most somptuous building of the town. Then it was turned into the first post-office of the Lombardo-Veneto reign.
Ristorante Da Mimmo is appreciate by Regione Lombardia as historical restaurant with local importance.

this is a cheap and nice restaurant where i often go with my friends. You can have mainly beef. Note that you CAN'T RESERVE A TABLE in advance, you have to go there, ask for a table and then wait. They're kind and will call you by phone when the table is ready so in the meantime you can go in a near bar and have an apetizer.
Favorite Dish: any kind of beef they cook

Charming, stylish, atmosphere. View from terrace over valley. Terrace looks to be open air in warm weather. Food is nicely presented, reasonable prices. Nice wines. Child friendly. Lots of gelato choices for dessert. We paid 81 Euros for lunch for two adults and two children. My entree was 9 Euros. Spouse had mixed grilled seafood for 18 Euros. Pizzas ran about 6 Euros.
Favorite Dish: I had rabbit with polenta. Yummy.

This is a lovely little deli located in the main thoroughfare of the old town (Via Gombita.) They have lovely lunches: salads and sandwiches or panini made with their extensive range of local produce. They stock local wine, hams, salamis and cheeses. Of course they also have pastries, cakes and good coffee.
The owners are very friendly and generous and they gave us complimentary little tasters of desserts. I think i went there 3 times for lunch over the course of my 6 day stay in Bergamo and this charming little deli has stayed with me for a long time afterward.
Favorite Dish: Excellent salads consisting of local produce

This place offers many kinds of pasta, from spaghetti, to tagliatelle, from gnocchi to lasagne, so, if you want to explore this part of Italian cuisine, this restaurant is definitely for you.
They also have more than pasta (despite the name "pasta e basta" which means "only pasta") but of course pasta is peculiar.
It's closed on Wednesday.
(The only bad thing I can say about this place is that they didn't have fresh parmesan for their pasta, quite annoying for an Italian!)
Favorite Dish: "Tris" is my favourite one: three kinds of pasta all together in the same plate. It's not because it would be boring to have the whole plate filled with the same marvellous stuff but it's for those who are curious to try more at once!
For one main dish, a drink and dessert we paid 16 euros per person.
