In the streets of the Citta Alta and perhaps even elsewhere in Bergamo (can't confirm form own experience) you'll find bakeries that apart form bread also sell pizza snacks - they're pizzas with different ingredients on top baked in large pieces. The dough is also not the classical pizza style thin. You juts point to the one you like and they cut a piece from it with special scissors. They make an excellent take away Italian style snack.

I read about this dessert on other VT member's pages and decided to try it as it's supposed to be a typical speciality from this region. One thing I can say about it - it's only for people with a very very sweet tooth, for me it was too much, although I love sweets...

This is a well hidden secret - they have the best pizza I have ever tasted here and it's the most hidden place with the most annoying owner, but don't let that put you off. You can find it opposite the church at Via Pignolo, next to it is a small ice cream bar. The place isn't very charming inside - dark and usually empty - only sometimes a few locals here and there with a grumpy Italian man behind the bar who takes your orders and then makes the pizza himself. We supposed he's also the owner. But the pizza is well worth it and they have excellent value menus! Around 7 Euros a pizza and a beer.
Favorite Dish: Pizza - any kind, but one of the best was definetly frutti di mare and the one with ruccola. They also have wonderful pasta salads during lunch menu. Accompany with red house wine and enjoy :-)

A small and very nice place just in the shopping area of lower Bergamo. You can have many delicious cakes, tea, coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate and many other wonderful things.
Last time I went there I saw that they serve english breakfast on sunday morning (if you really want to have it in Italy...)
Cakes are not that cheap (even if it's not expensive at all) but I think Sweet Irene deserves a visit because of the nice atmosphere and the delicious cakes.
You can also buy many types of jam, chocolate and cakes and take them home.
(closed on monday)
Take "via XX settembre" ( the pedestrian street in the lower town full of clothes shop) from "porta nuova" to "piazza pontida". On your left you'll see a narro street called "via Sant'orsola", take it and walk until it ends, for 50-100 m. ON the left you'll find sweet irene.
Favorite Dish: I don't remember the name of that cake but it was a mix of chocolate and raspberry

This is a small restaurant but it's one of my favourite restaurants in my town. It has also some tables on a terrace with a breathtaking belvedere on the flat. It can be very romantic, with the right company of course!
Favorite Dish: My favourite dishes in this restaurant are:
"casoncelli", typical ravioli from Bergamo, with bacon and melted butter
"foiade", another typical kind of pasta, fery often served with "porcini" mushrooms.
In my opionion you should taste "valcalepio" wine, typical from this part of italy.

This restuarant serves very average quality food at a high price. I would say that the ingredients used were not of good quality is the main results. We had atichoke rissotto but there were too tough. We had local beef fillet and it was also not soft. We had casoncelli and these were not as good as those prepared by Ristorante Albergo Sole at the corner of Piazza Vecchia. The prices were also higher. I would not recommend this restuarant with so many good restuarant in Citta Alta. I think the food in Da Franco tasted better.
Favorite Dish: Perhaps the bread which is very good.

We have just spent four days in Bergamo and we visited this restaurant three times for lunch and dinners. We tried various dishes including the local pastas and antipastas. These were all very delicious and the portions were generous. For those who want to try good italian pasta and rissotto, they have dish with three different kinds - rissotto, gnochi and casoncelli for you to try. However, you need to order the same for two persons. You can see the photo here. We also tried various starters and these were also very good. This restaurant was also recommended by Vincenzo - gratias.

I think Ciao! is the name of this restaurant?!
This place is located in the Citta Bassa, near Porta Nouva. It is basically a self-service canteen type of place, but I found it really handy. Basically you can just point at anything that looks vaguely appetising (which is really handy when you can't speak Italian!). The food is enjoyable and really quite cheap.
Also, they have a balcony where you can sit out in the (kinda) fresh air and look out over the city.
Favorite Dish: I had Risotto (which I love) with cheese and mushrooms and it was very nice.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money and you don’t want to eat a piece of pizza or a sandwich you can go to the Circoletto. During the meal in summer you can enjoy also a beautiful view.
I and my aunt had lunch here and for two plates of pasta, a coffee and a bottle of water we had spent only 9 €.
