W flew to Milan Bergamo - which is not so close for Milan but great for Bergamo!
We left from Liverpool which has cheap flights with Ryanair (ours was just £30 return inc taxes. No frills servicce but no complaints this time around - on time and luggage came too! Only snag is they are evening flights and you probably arrive just as the last bus to the old town finishes :-S

It is wise to compare all the different airlines.
I found Ryanair at the moment of booking the cheapest.
Well the fare depends on 2 things: first of all the date you travel, as weekends and official holidays are expensive, and second, the earlier you book, the lower the fair.
I chose to depart on a Wednesday, preceding an official catholic holiday and to return on Wednesday, the week after. Ordered the ticket well in advanced I hardly had to pay 87 Euro all included.
The luggage you can take is however limited, 15 kilo’s luggage and some hand luggage.
But for a short trip to a rather warm country that will do!
I chose to depart from Eindhoven. The distance to my place is about the same as Charleroi but in “Brussels South”, the hours were as good as impossible.
The plane was ok. There was not so much leg space but that is no problem to me as I have short legs.
The luggage storage above the seats is small and it is a pushing to get everyone’s stuff in.
You should avoid putting something that is fragile, with the pushing it might break.

To reach the other funicular station:
pass through the main square, keeping the Sansovino library on your right, follow the straight street right through town until the gate at the end , and the funicular is on the square on the other side of the gate.
goes from the Porta San Alessandro to San Vigilio. It is a very short ride, and from the San Vigilio church you have very nice views!

The train station is right at the end of Bergamo Bassa's central avenue, Viale Giovanni XXIII, which becomes Via Vittorio Emanuele II. To the right are the two bus stations : the SAB, serving the northern mountains and valleys, and the Stazione Autolinee, serving all other destinations.
Bus #1 runs from the train station to the funicular station at the foot of the hill, from where you can make the ascent by cable car to Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe for no extra charge as long as you show your bus ticket. Alternatively you can get bus #1A from Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII, along the central avenue and up to Bergamo Alta.

As of April 1, 2005, our city has a new mass transportation system. Most bus routes have been altered and a new fare system is now in force. The city center ticket is valid 75 minutes and now costs 1 Euro. A ten-trips carnet costs € 7.50 and will let you save 25%. There is also a one-day tourist ticket (€ 2.50) and a three-day ticket (€ 5.00).
IMPORTANT: Rejoice all ye beloved fellow travellers, you don't need anymore to walk for a couple of miles carrying your heavy backpacks on your shoulders. The new bus route #3 goes straight from Upper Town to the Youth Hostel. You can otherwise take bus route #6 from city center (Porta Nuova) to the stadium, then hop on #3. No dreadful endurance tests anymore!!

You can climb up or, if by car, you can drive up to the Upper Town of Begamo, but don't miss this unique funicular to get there. I am sure you'll enjoy the short ride more then you can imagine it. Btw, there is a wonderful sightseeing of the Citta Bassa from the cafe-bar terrace which is next to the Funicular station.

The “Stadio atleti azzuri d’Italia” is close to the center, and it’s really a nice walk from the trainstation. Problem is to find the right way, so if it’s the first time in Bergamo I suggest that you take the bus from the station instead, leaving you close to the stadium in just 7-8 minutes.
By foot it will take around 20-25 minutes. Say 30 if you walk a bit slower. Ask someone for directions, and you won’t probably have any trouble to find it.
There are trains to and from Milano every hour, and there is also a bus-shuttle leaving close from the station that goes to Milano every hour, at least.
By car it’s the same as always in Italy. When you get into the town you’ll soon find the signs with “stadio” written on them, with a football written beside. Just follow them.
There might be some problems to find parking close to the stadium, but if you’re there early it shouldn’t be a problem.

This is me :-) before getting onto my Wizz air flight to Katowice i decided to take a self pic of me. It was a chilly morning and i covered my head with typical Pakistani cap which is ideal for such weather :-)
Btw, if u want to benefit from best fares of all the airlines flying to Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport you must go to their websites and look for the promotional fares or offers. Try to book in advance and i am sure u will be able to fly cheaper than a taxi :-)
