    Historical

by icunme Updated Dec 2, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Thanks to VT's kokoryko, I did my research and have found most interesting information on Como:

    Population: approximately 90,000
Located: Between Brunate Mount, Baradello Castle & the Lake.

Pliny the Elder noted in his "Historiae Naturalis" that the original in habitants of the Como area were the Orobi who were overcomed by Insubre Gauls. According to this same record, the Insubre Gauls were founders of the oppidum (the first seed of Como) - the inhabited district equipped for defense, which was conquered by the Romans in 196 b.c. - the year from which historians date the life of Como.
Thanks to Ceasar, Como was rebuilt where it stands today; was fortified as a Roman colony.
The strategic position and leading role Como played in trade led to the 10-year war with Milan, which ended with the defeat of Como in 1127. Isola Comicina aligned itself with Milan and pledged its fleet to demolish the city walls.
Barbarossa gave Como the chance to recover. He encouraged a league among communes against Milan and it was taken and destroyed in 1162. In 1169 Comicina suffered the revenge of Como and the inhabitants were forced to move to Varenna.
In subsequent centuries, Como bowed to French, Spanish and Austrian domination. Napoleon's victorious troops entered Lombardy in 1796 where they remained until 1815 when Vienna restored the status quo to pre-Napoleon time.
The Risorgimento ended in Como in 1859 when the city was conquered by Garibaldi and Como followed the history of Italy.

Fondest memory: Jumping from the top of our old ski club on the lake.

    Elegant Villa

by draguza Written Oct 4, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I do not remember the name of this beautiful Villa, but I came across it many times while following the Promenade on the Lake.

Unfortunately the Villa is not open to the public, as it serves nowadays for private meetings, gathering, conferences and events. Last time I passed by, people were having inside a sort of rich "buffet" and they were all dressed with elegant clothes, maybe a wedding? Pity we were not invited to join them!

    BMW cat

by Aurorae Written Feb 1, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This cat was hilarious! As clasy as the car it occupied (not naive cat at all!) It was in front of the yachting club, of course, where all the super expensive show-off snob cars gather. This a la Lucifer cat was resting comfortably in its de luxe sofa. :)

    Dog poop pick up

by Aurorae Written Feb 1, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Something I'm very impressed with - machines that automatically eject equipment for dog poop removal! You insert 20 cents and you get a plastic bag that you should use to pick up your dog's poop in case you haven't brought one of your own! Genial invetion, to keep this beautiful place clean!

    Como "suburbs"

by Aurorae Written Feb 1, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The city of Como extends not only around the lake but also on the hills around, and just imagine the view those houses on the top might have! Besides, I have always thought that living in the suburbs is much better than the hectic center!

    Takumachi sister city

by Aurorae Written Feb 1, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I hope I reembered the name well, if not, my apologies... In front of the Aero Club, there is a small park with this bizarre and hideous monument, that was errected to celebrate anniversary of sister city of Como, Takumachi in Japan. There are inscriptions in Japanese and Italian, and the sculptures show children trapped in strange positions, as if tortured, I really thought it was awful. :(

My best football related moment in Como

by Calcio Written Dec 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Normally when I go to games I'll go all by myself. Out of 50 games I see, I'm all alone on 40 of them.
So everytime I get someone with me it's a very good moment! :)

My best game in Como was in april 2003 when I went there to see Como-Modena. With me I had a great american friend, and we had a great time together, although the game was quite much crap...

The weather was fantastic, so we were sitting there in just t-shirts, enjoying the sun, and watching the football.

My friend hadn't been to so many games before, so her fondest memory of that game was all the bad words the italian guys around us used for the referee and the opponents. :D

Where to buy your tickets for the game

by Calcio Written Dec 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There are three small ticket-offices around the stadium, on the outside of the tribunes.
First you must decide which section you would like to sit in, as you can't buy tickets for all sectors at every office.

For a neutral I would advice the smaller longside of the stadium, as the price is cheaper, but you'll see as good as if you were sitting on the head-tribune. Tickets there costs much more.

Have no idea how much the tickets cost now in Serie C2, but you shouldn't pay more than 10-12 euro for a good seat.

Away-supporters stands in the curva, and the Como-supporters that still goes to the stadium stands in the other end of the stadium.

    Piazza del Duomo

by tpal Written Nov 4, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The Piazza del Duomo seems to be the emotional heart of the city. Named obviously for the Cathedral it is a great place to window shop. It's also fun to people watch from one of the many cafes on its perimeter. You will find that the privilege of being in the center of the action will cost a bit more. Two cappuccinos and two cookies cost us ten euro but then we did get to share our table the pigeons.
