Brunate, Lago di Como
Well, since there was yet another strike in Italy and the ferry was not operating, I walked over to the funicolare, which was about the only form of transportation operating today (Friday, Nov 30th).
The entire ride up to Brunate provided great views of the lake and the mountains.
Once you arrive on top, there are spectacular vista everywhere.
Brunate is a lovely destination itself, as well as for the views of Como, lake and Alps. The temperature is cooler than in Como, so be prepared.
Once in Brunate you can climb further up, on foot or getting some kind of a transportation, up to the Lighthouse which is in the top of the hill. That lighthouse is making the lights of Italian flag by night - green, red and white. It is dedicated to Alessandro Volta, a great scientist from Como. From there you can enjoy spectacular view over the lake, this time it's the western bank, with Cernobbio and further up.
However, keep in mind that you might run onto numeruous school excursions, try not to be annoyed by all those kids! :-)
Take a funicolare (cable) from Como up to Brunate, and explore around. You'll be amazed how fanbtastic is the view on the lake and town from up there!
You can also arrive by car (the road is very curvy!), but I find funicolare much more exciting!
There are panels pointing directions everywhere so you can't get lost nor miss the view point!
