Lago di Como Things to Do

  • Lakeside Towns

We took a boat to Varenna, which looked like a fairytale village from the boat, and it didn't disappoint us when we walked there. It's a mere village and less touristy than Bellagio and thus have more authenticity to it. We really loved it. We wanted to have pizza for lunch/dinner that day but as usual we wanted to eat at difficult time and ended...

The weather changes so quickly and the forecasts are little help. So, if you awaken and find yourself in the midst of a clear day - don't miss the boat. Every time I go out on the lake I see a new view.

  • Isola Comacina

Isola Comacina is a beautiful island in lake Como, just across and very near to Sala Comacina, a charming little town on the shore. At Isola Comacina there are many villas, one of them was used in the newest Star Wars movies as Naboo. :) It's in the vicinity of Sala Comacna, on a small peninsula. Sala COmacina is a lovely little town, or a village,...

  • Como Promenade

Few have visited Lago di Como and not taken this most famous Passeggiata - Lino Gelpi. It leads you along the lake from Piazza Cavour at the historic center lakeside to Villa Olmo. Whatever the season, you will see enchanting Lake vistas, villas, locals and tourists alike.

  • Brunate

Well, since there was yet another strike in Italy and the ferry was not operating, I walked over to the funicolare, which was about the only form of transportation operating today (Friday, Nov 30th). The entire ride up to Brunate provided great views of the lake and the mountains. Once you arrive on top, there are spectacular vista...

  • Vistas

The little viewing areas that jut out slightly into the lake from Passeggiata Lino Gelpi were strategically placed to give you an extraordinary view from each vista. After a few visits, I noticed that they are all different design and shapes - square - oval - round. Much thought given to our aestetic pleasure.

Lago di Como Restaurants

  • Try and find those out of the way...

While on Lake Como make sure not to go to the restaurants in Bellagio or any other tourist trap area because those restaurants can be pretty pricey. Take a drive along the lake and stop off in some out of the way towns on the lake that are not as well known and you'll be pleasantly surprised.Find a trattoria and you will eat well without spending...

  • Nice and cosy

My Italian pal took us for a meal here and we really enjoyed our lunch there. It was very busy when we were there, clients were a mixture of locals and tourists. Waiter was very friendly and helpful, though we didn't really deal with him, as my pen friend did all the talking being the only one of us who spoke Italian. Ambience was lovely too and...

This is a veeeeeeeeery BEAUTIFUL restaurant at the main square in Cernobbio, by the lake side, where the boat station, heroes monument and children playground are. :) It's quite small, but impossible not to detect as it is the only restaurant/bar over there! :) It is almost entirely glass-walled, with wonderful overview on the square, lake and...

  • L'orrido di Nesso - La Cascata

Family-run restaurant, pizzeria, bar, bed&breakfast on several floors on the cliffs above Como lake in Nesso, overlooking the stunning l'orrido di Nesso (sort of a gorge) and the lake itself. The owners are extremely kind, friendly and hospitable and the food is delicious! Calzone!

  • San Bernardo

A very nice and cozy place near Laglio, on the left bank of the Como lake. It's decorated in the old countryside style, with wooden ceiling and rustic ornaments and items. The food is great (delicious calzone liscio), but the staff is not the kindest in the world. The cashier is even rude, vile and very Nazi in her disposition. However, the...

  • Excellent Fish Dishes

Located on a sidestreet two back and parallel to Como's waterfront drag, a most non-descript entrance hides a spacious and bright dining room suitable for small or large groups. Frequented by locals as well as visitors, the restaurant boasts an excellent seafood menu as well as pizza/pasta and meat dishes ranging from 10-25 EU. I enjoyed immensely...

Lago di Como Transportation

  • Shuttle Boars

Getting between villages on Lake Como is very easy using the lake transport system. We used the boat from Lecco to Bellagio (just over and hour) and then from Bellagio to Varenna (15 minutes). The boat to Bellagio makes approximately 6-7 stops along the way. The scenery is magnificent and even though the weather was cool sitting outside on deck was...

  • Boat rental...no other way to discover...

We stayed on Lake Como for 4 days and we decided to rent a small motorboat (40Hp - to drive without any license) to visit Lake Como all around. It's the best way to discover towns and typical water landscapes. We rent a boat from AC BOAT (www.acboatrentals.com) in Menaggio. The company is very professional and boats are new and very clean, probably...

Lago di Como Shopping

  • The markets on Lake Como

Make sure to visit some of the many markets around Lake Como, they are not expensive and there are some really great finds such as pottery and jewelery. There are markets everywhere on Lake Como each open only on certain days. Get a pamphlet from your hotel to find out the times of the markets. There is also fresh fruit sold at the...

  • Como - Silk! What Else Would You Expect?

To me shopping is often more about the experience than the bargains. This probably helps explains why I don't buy much. If you have ever shopped in Filene's Basement then you'll understand when I say, "I don't have much patience for "deals at any hardship" shopping." This place I liked!Called "la tessitura", this a wonderful silk shop. Their...

Lago di Como Local Customs

  • The swans are not shy

Nope - not a shy feather here. If you stop while no one else is feeding them, it is their custom to let you know you are supposed to be there at the Lake with bread in hand for them - they can be quite vocal about it!

  • Birds of a feather - ta da, ta da....

This group was undisturbed by the proximity of the boats and people disembarking. Maybe that's just what they were gathered to do - people watching - its contagious along Lake Como.

  • Gone fishin - by Villa d'Este

As I climbed the dock at Cernobbio, I glanced toward Villa d'Este and happened to see this gentleman fishing - right there between the dock and the Villa. You don't see many people fishing now on the Lake - not like a few years ago. They did announce that the lake is badly contaminated, so I wonder what someone might catch that would be fit to eat....

Lago di Como Warnings and Dangers

  • Yes - much has changed at Lake...

I've written on my pages about our sadness that our little water ski club is but a memory of the summer of 2004. We jumped from the roof here, went water skiing, and would swim to Villa d'Este - no more - not only is the club gone; but the pollution is prohibitive. In 2007 it was reported that Lake Como is too polluted to swim in, with...

Lago di Como Tourist Traps

  • icunme's Profile Photo

by icunme Written Nov 10, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The little floating cafe looks cute enough sitting there by the lake. However, the food and refreshments are not up to standard and there is apt to be considerable instability as the wake from the ferries rock you to and fro and they come and go.

There are many little passageways in the park behind the Villa. I spent an afternoon just wandering the little seldom-tred paths. Here is one of the parks lovely little secrets. 1) A little stream flows down from the mountain - 2) under the street that borders Villa Olmo - meanders through the property and runs into the lake (photo 3) We just had a...

Pigra is a tiny village high up in the mountains of Como which you can reach by cable car from the village of Argegno, or drive up. The cable car leaves every half hour and is a wonderful scenic experience. The views of the lake are wonderful from up high. We noticed many cyclists going up in the cable car with their bikes, in order to cycle down.

Lago di Como Favorites

  • Italy's third largest lake and the...

Only 52 km Milan, Lago di Como has always been a destination for the Milanese. The lake takes an inverted "Y" shape and each little town and village beckons to you. Lake Como is long (50km), slender and extremely deep. The southern end forks into two long "legs, with the picturesque town of Bellagio situated on the promontory between them.
