Driving from north to south along the Gardesana Occidentale, the first village you see after Riva del Garda. It lies under a huge cliff and it seems to be afraid of it. I am sorry for the bad picture but the wind was blowing so bad when i visited that it was impossible to hold still!!!
It is a real gem but unfortunally, the municipality seems to be a little too interested in getting your money as there are NO free parking at all, not even far from the center!! the area in front of the village have been made as a giant parking lot and you cant even get close to the village without pyaying a fee. It is a real shame.
Otherwise Limone sul Garda worth a visit and it is really pleasant if you are staying there. As from its name it is famous for the citrus they grow. In the picture (agin... i am so sorry it is so bad) you can see the stone greenhouses they use to keep the tree warm and protected.
Limione has a poor reputation for crowds but during our visit in May it was very pleasant. A good beach and a number of lake front restaurants to get into. It has a resort feel to it but worth a visit all the same.
Limone is the resort across the lake from Malcesine - a smallish resort squashed up against the rock behind - most of the hotels are on a hill! By car there are several tunnels to negotiate and narrow roads! Still was happy to visit and browse the colourful shops - the boutiques have beautiful clothes here, cleverly displayed with matching accessories - you could spend a fortune! We settled for an iced coffee at a lovely waterfront bar (Cafe Gemma was the name) and watched the boats plying the lake.
t was getting late but the weather was slightly improving so when we left one of the tunnels of the road and crossed the village we decided to stop just for a while. It was a great decision. This little village looks like if it has been transported from the Mediterraneo area, the olives, lemons, way of life remind me some areas of Spain.
The little streets going down to the lake front were full of surprises and the views incredible.
In front of the parochial church, another church seems to be more recent but I could not find any information on its name and date of building. The inhabitants of Limone are studied by scientists as they carry the "apoprotein A1 Milano", a killer of cholesterol. Their study could bring information for the treatment of cholesterol.
The parochial church of Limone sul Garda is situated on the bank of the lake. It was built at the end of the XVIIth century. Inside, a lot of art works are on display, that we did not visit as we were on a day trip and had to head back to the VT meeting !
Limone sul Garda is a small city of the west bank, at 66 meters elevation, with less than 1,000 inhabitants. To get into the city, you have to leave the main road, which is upper on the mountain slopes and drive down. In May, the city is very quiet though terraces of the cafés are already booked and you must be lucky to get a table.
It is widely believed Limone get its name from being a major lemon growing area, infact it is from the word Limen, which is Latin for boarder!
I found this to be quite a buzzing little town, with it being on the north of the lake, it is surrounded by huge cliffs & mountains tumbling in to the lake. The church in the photo is unusual San Benedetto
Limone Sul Garda became popular with tourist just before WW2 & has been one ever since. There is a ring road around the lake which came to Limone in 1932, putting the town on the tourist map. Before then the income of the town had come from lemons, olives & fishing.
