Lago di Garda Things to Do

  • Gardaland

Largest theme park in Italy - definately stop here with the kids (or if you're a big kid like me its fine too) with range of rides (30+ in total) and 6 roller coasters. It's pretty pricey (around 30+€ for a standard ticket) but there are other options and promotions on frequently. There's also an aquarium which you can get access to separately...

  • Malcesine

Head to Malcesine which is a beautiful town at the bottom of Mont Baldo. The town in itself might be a consideration for somewhere to stay, but we just headed here to take the cable car up the 1800 feet to check out the views. In summer you can take a walk and take in the stunning scenery and in winter you can take the car up with your skis and go...

  • Sirmione

Sirmione is one or probably the most famous place in Lago di Garda. So many tourists and so many nice shops (all type of shops and more...more than one can immagine). This is Castello Rocca Scaligera, which is the first thing you see as you arrive in Sirmione! We arrived there with a bus from Verona! It was a great idea to visit this wonderful...

  • The ONLY Bar for drinks and snacks

In Navazzo there is only one bar, and it is across the street from the Running Club Hotel and Pizzeria. This place is the waterhole for all cyclists. They stop on the way up to fill their waterbottles from the local spring/fountain, and on the way back they stop here for some cool refreshment and gab. The owner is super friendly and happy to see...

  • Top Of Mountain With Thatched Roofs

The drive to the top has made you hungry, and here is a tip on where to find some great food while viewing the valley below. Turn the other direction and you can watch the farmers collect their hay, behind the small village with thatched roofs.Sit in a beach chair and enjoy the sun after lunch, shop in the hand made curio shop, and then walk in the...

  • Gourmet Lover's Osteria

Highly recommended, we knew we were in the right place for exceptional food when we set down next to the bookshelf filled with gourmet cooking magazines and specialized cooking books. Photos of the owner with famous Italians line the wine shelf in the back. We were not disappointed as the food was more than expected. This osteria is NOT on the port...

  • Spectacular Fireworks

We were lucky to see two spectacular fireworks while we were there: the campground organized one and there was also a Lazise "Festa dell'Ospite".During the summer season there seem to be quite a few nice fireworks, so ask your hosts or check the newspapers - it sure is well worth it!

Lago di Garda Transportation

  • Malcesine Cable-Car

A trip to Lake Garda must include a ride on the new cable car of Malcesine up to Monte Blado in about 10 minutes, the cabins rotating as it glides up in the air. From here you have wonderful views over the lake - if its not too hazy! It is also possible to transport para-gliders and bikes.Check the website for opening times and current prices....

  • Navigazione ~ ship navigation

You can go around the Garda lake with a boat, there is a public transport, as well as a private one. There is a timetable and all the useful information at the website indicated below. They also organize New Year's Eve cruises, with dinner, music and programme, and it costs about 120 euros, in case you're interested :))

  • Garda lake boat transfers

There are regular boat lines connecting small towns on Garda lake, some for passengers only, and there is also a ferry connecting Torri and Maderno.Sirmione is very well connected with many other towns, since it is the most popular tourist spot in the area.

  • Local cheese in Gargnano

Walking the main street in Gargnano we found a "Gastronomia" (delicatessen shop). They had a sign about local produced cheese, we could not help to go check it out. Along with the usual selection of delicatessen (that all look really yummy) they had a selection of maybe ten cheese, all local produced, some made with cow milk some with goat milk. We...

  • All kinds of souvenirs in Gardaland

Most Gardaland attractions offer themed shopping opportunities as well - it's all part of the park experience. You can buy practically anything - toys, clothes, accessories, stationery, craft, gadgets, etc. It's absolutely up to you - prices are about the same as in the tourist centres of Italy

Lago di Garda Local Customs

  • Smoking or non smoking?

There are lots of non-smoking signs all around Gardaland, but Italians couldn't care less - they were smoking everywhere, even right next to these signs. Generally I don't mind if people smoke outside, but it was very unpleasant while we were waiting in the queues.

  • Feeding the Ducks

You'll find ducks walking freely everywhere around, they aren't shy to enter the restaurants/bars and pick up food from you. Many people are feeding the ducks, which of course, increases their interest in people and bars. :-) They are very kind and not agressive, so you can feed them freely if you want.

  • Relaxing

People adore to stay by the lake and read or simply enjoy the view, relax and breathe the fresh air. There are plenty of benches, but often you'd see people on the grass, like on the picnic. Most of them would be foreigners. The best time to enjoy this relaxing activity is late afternoon.

Lago di Garda Warnings and Dangers

  • Bike Accidents

In the hills of Lake Garda you will find many bikers and motorbikers. You must be careful on blind turns. They sometimes are thoughtless and enjoy the thrill of going around a corner at a high speed, thus swinging out and over into your lane. Slow down a bit, and watch for them.On the road called Valvestino parco... there have been 92 deaths in the...

  • Speed Traps

Italy has become modern, and there are speed traps that you hardly notice. They take a photo and send you the ticket, highly priced ones at that. Therefore, when you come to a village and there is a speed change sign,,, follow it!Also, there are numerous speed traps with cameras on the Motorway. If you have a navigator, listen to it, and beware when...

Getting from Sirmione to one of the islands by boat. The tower of the Grand Hotel should be your parameter and focus it. But look to itthat the tower stays vertical in your eyes and brains.Once this is the case - and your look at the tower is clear (not in case of bad weather of course) you may be shure you arrived safely on the island. Lago di Garda Tourist Traps

  • Keep Your Pocket Money

The villages on the west side of the lake have been kind enough to put out plenty of seats where you can enjoy the lake. If you are tired and thirsty, you don't have to go to a bar and spend twice as much for a bottled or canned drink. Just go into a store and buy it over the counter and then go sit by the lake and enjoy the view.Example... two...

If all you want is gain access to the top of the Baldo range, this mode of transport is fine. Basically, you wait up to 15 minutes to buy your ticket, another half hour wait gets you to the...

  • Cascata Varone

Cascata Varone is a 100 meter waterfall just north of Riva Del Garda on the very north shore, which you pay to see. This is one lovely safari style zoo with great variety of animals and exhibitions.
