Focus the Tower
4 more images

Getting from Sirmione to one of the islands by boat.
The tower of the Grand Hotel should be your parameter and focus it. But look to it
that the tower stays vertical in your eyes and brains.
Once this is the case - and your look at the tower is clear (not in case of bad weather of course) you may be shure you arrived safely on the island. LOL

Parking prices are really expensive all over the area, the first hour minimum was 1,50 euros up to 2,50 euros, and specially in a aarea where you do various stops to enjoy the villages, you do not have an option, specially when you do not know if it is legal or not to park, bette pay the parking that the bill!!

attention there is deep trench

The local road alongside Lago di Garda is very curved and pretty narrow. Those of you who are not used on such a standards should drive very carefuly when here, otherwise it might happen to you the same what happened to this young guy from Germany (see the picture, he finished with his car in the trench).

The streets of Sirmione

The area of Lake of Garda is very crowded in the Summer season and weekends during the year. This, on the picture, is a typical scene of Sirmione in the August. The same goes for Desenzano, Bardolino, Lazise and other places around the lake. Take good care of your things and in particularly money, coz this kind of crowd is the paradise for the pich pockets.

Heavy rain in Desenzano

Before the trip, I read that thunderstorms form quickly by the lake. It has to do with wind from the mountains, if I remember it correctly. I noticed this was true our very first night in Desenzano. There was an awful cloudburst (heavy rain), the thunder sounded much louder here and the wind created big waves on the lake (so I wouldn't go on a boat trip on that day!). But it disappeared quickly and the rest of the week was great, until our last night, hehe.

Another weather related thing. It was very warm during our holiday which created a heat haze. This was a real pity cause most of the big mountains were hidden and made your view of the lake bad in general. I thought the mountains were really pretty, but could only see them properly once.

Gnats

There were loads of gnats by Lake Garda. I'm not sure if there's a better word for them, but they're like mini-mosquitoes minus the biting. There used to be big svarms of gnats, especially during hot, humid evenings. They're not exactly dangerous, but it was still annoying. Don't make the same mistake we did - have a light on in the room where there's a door/window open. We got hundreds of gnats in the room!!!

Strange woman on the train
SwedeSarah profile photo
SwedeSarah 102 reviews

Everytime we went on the inter city train between Milan and Venice (near Lake Garda), there was this woman who would put some keyrings on an empty seat next to us. There was a card also, but I never read it. Then she would come back after a while and remove the keyrings. It was obvious that she wanted to sell them (don't know why she bothered, they were nothing special). I'm not sure if this is some kind of trick she tried to pull or if she was collecting money for charity. But just be careful if you run into her.

This is the scariest ride in whole Gardaland.

People (brave? crazy?) get pulled up 40 meters high, and then dropped down into free fall.

I wouldn't let my daughters go on this one, but they cleverly charmed their daddy while I wasn't near. The younger one thinks she actually fainted for a second.

Of course, there is an automatic camera to take a picture of your face, so you can remember one of the scariest moments in your life.

Rain clouds at Lake Garda

The weather at Lake Garda can change from one minute to the other. We experienced that a couple of times and really got wet - because we just did not think of taking weather gear along with us.

Thunderstorms come and go - and usually the weather will be just the opposite of what you expect...

Clouds over the camp site, Manerba

Every now and again when evening fell, it began to storm and dark clouds gathered above us.
People that had experienced the hail storms the year before made sure tents and such things were anchored well.
On the picture you can see my hubby conferencing with the neighbour campers about the possibility of a hail storm, which didn t happen luckily :-)
