    The classic view of Lecco

by Ekaterinburg Written Aug 29, 2012

Favorite thing: The classic view of Lecco

After lunch I walked to the other side of town and now looking back, I saw the classic view of Lecco I'd admired on so many photos. This is the view of Lecco's campanile and duomo, with Monte San Martino, standing guard behind. Over here the promenade ends in a grassy and graveled area with an impressive war memorial and a series of pillars and steps going down into the lake. By now the activity in Lecco was reaching boiling point as people warmed up for the road race and others queued for registration. For me it was time to go and my conclusion - a busy, lively and definitely charming town which more then does justice to the famous lake it skirts.

    A superb lakeside promenade

by Ekaterinburg Updated Aug 29, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Lakeshore promenade at Lecco

The lakeside promenade at Lecco is one of the prettiest and pedestrian friendly, I've ever walked on. When you come downhill from the train station and eventually arrive at one of the two main piazzas, you are right on the lakeshore and the tree-lined promenade extends as far as the eye can see. The trees are very important because no matter how hot or sunny it gets, you can keep walking and know there is cool shade there when you need it. There are also lots and lots of benches, ensuring that when you need to take a break or have a little impromptu picnic, there is going to be somewhere to sit. I walked as far as the next ferry stop outside of Lecco and the promenade continued all the way. Outside of town, the drop to the water was steeper but on the crescent-shaped stretch in the town centre you could perch right on the edge of the paved slope and really enjoy the breeze from the lake. Walking, taking photographs or just sitting and taking in the gorgeous views, was a totally relaxing experience and all credit to Lecco for providing such a lovely and functional promenade.

    Lecco town

    Piazza Cermenati, Lecco
    2 more images

Favorite thing: From my descriptions so far it's quite likely that one could forget that there is a town in Lecco as well as THAT lake. Well there certainly is a town and the little I saw of it looked very pleasant indeed. I walked directly from the train station to the lake down a steep street with lots of nice shops and cafes. Just before the lake I strolled through Piazza XX Settembre and then Piazza Cermenati which are two large piazzas that almost come together to form the centre of town. These piazzas were an absolute hive of activity with a stage, local radio station and all the participants in a road race that was taking place that day. If the town had been more exotic or the architecture more compelling, perhaps I'd have strayed a little more but as it was I was quite pleased not to be distracted from my aim of spending time by the lake. But having said that I'm sure if I had explored the town in more detail that I would have enjoyed it.

    Next time !

    Lake Como at Lecco
    4 more images

Favorite thing: This part of Lake Como is sometimes known as Lake Lecco but for me it was Lake Como at Lecco and in my humble opinion, just perfect. Given how diiificult it is to get to Como itself from Bergamo and the extra time it would have taken me to go on to Bellagio or Varenna , getting a taste of Lake Como so easily seemed a little like cheating and almost to good to be true. But sometimes, less is more and easy is good and I think you can see this quite clearly from my photographs. The views of Lake Como from Lecco are classic northern Italian lakeside views and very beautiful indeed. Having read about Lecco being an industrialised town, this really surprised me but there's no industry polluting or obscuring the panorama of the lake. The further you walk along the promenade, the more the view changes and the lake opens up. It changes from pretty to dramatic to almost wild and I can imagine how windswept and turbulent it would be in stormy weather. The many pleasure boats and ferries looked secure and idyllic but my mind did wander occasionally to English poets and drownings. An evocative place !

Look at the photos and enjoy those views.

    Lake Como without George Clooney

by Ekaterinburg Updated Aug 29, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Saturday afternoon at Lecco

Favorite thing: Lecco is situated almost at the end of the eastern leg of lake Como, almost diametrically opposite Laglio on the western leg, where George Clooney has a villa. This just about sums up Lecco. It has the lake, it has the snowcapped mountain peaks and green villa-studded slopes. But the villas are on the opposite shore to the town centre and this is a place where people work and make a living in ways that don't all depend on tourism

I saw none of the trappings of mass tourism here: no tacky souvenirs, no postcard displays cluttering up the pavements and best of all, no tour buses. The town was very busy on Saturday afternoon but it was busy with families enjoying a Saturday afternoon stroll and the buzz of activity going on downtown. There were babies, toddlers, parents, grandparents, groups of friends, lovers and people messing about on their boats.

Compared to being crammed cheek to jowl on the narrrow streets of some of the more famous lakeside resorts, spending a relaxing afternoon in Lecco ,made an awful lot of sense.

    wind

    Lecco by Jelena

Favorite thing: Sometimes on the lake there is a very powerful wind, that makes it impossible almost to walk! It doesn't happen so often, but when it does, it's lethal! However, then the lake looks so beautiful with all the waves and the noise of the wind and water. Only the seagulls dare to confornt the wind!

    Morning serenity

Favorite thing: You'd expect the morning on the lake to be still, but in fact it's not. There are so many people around, mainly athletes, jogging or doing water sports (especially windsurfing). The wind is very strong in the morning, and they take advantage of it. As the day goes by, the wind slows down...
