Lecco Things to Do

  • Buy some mushrooms?

I was fascinated by this shop. It's actually a butcher's shop, but clearly does a roaring trade in mushrooms (dried and pickled) as well. The dried mushrooms, I noticed, were mainly from Bulgaria rather than Italy, but I thought the advice about how to keep them was very useful indeed. And I did like the beautiful...

  • Find the rest of the castle....

There are some rather impressive castle walls still remaining, along with a filled-in and grassed moat, but you'll have to seek them out. From the railway station walk to the right, up Via Montello. Hopefully, you'll be able to spot the walls. They date from the 1300s, I think, perhaps earlier. The castle was abandoned by 1782.

  • Explore some alleyways.

I did find some little alleyways around Piazza Roma which gave me a taste of what Medieval Lecco might have been like. Some stepped, some cobbled, some leading to unexpected small squares (one still with its own well). Worth a wander round to see what you can see. You never know what you'll find....I found a local policeman having a crafty cigarette...

  • Seek out Torre Viscontana

It won't be particularly easy, and you won't be able to get inside.Look to the far north-west of Piazza Roma...you'll see part of a Medieval tower. Wander along the lakeside wand seek out its other sides...you'll find just a tiny part exposed. All the rest of the tower is hidden by much later buildings. But I was pleased to find it, simply because it...

  • Wander the lakeside

To be fair, Lecco has created quite a pleasant lakeside promenade space, with tree and playgrounds and superb views across and along Lake Como.My day was grey and grim and overcast but in bright sunshine I'm sure the views would have been even more stunning.Worth a wander (and there's a branch of Grom, if you fancy a gelato or three). :-)

  • . . . we all scream for ice cream!

Whilst strolling down Via Cavour to find the lake, I walked past this ice cream shop then doubled back to make a purchase!! I had ananas (pineapple), vaniglia (vanilla) and stracciatella. All I can say is "Yummmm-y"!!I was served with a smile and the price was average - I was one happy lady!It was nice continuing me stroll eating gelato! It's a...

Its not really a restaraunt, but its just a really nice place to hang out and talk. They have lots of (delicious) variations of coffee, as well as tea, and a big selection of coffee accessories for sale (as well as chocolate!).They also have a set of advertisement postcards that you write and they will send FOR you... which is a great thing imho;...

  • Lakeside Aquarium

Its the percfect example of your basic italian pizzeria and food, only it offers a nice view of the lake (although there is a road between the dehor and the actual lakeside). Good food at good prices, only you have to walk a bit along the lungo lago (lakeside road), which one of the reasons its not as expensive as the restaurants along the lake in...

  • Midnight Munchies

This is a very particular thing in Italy... night time only bakeries! They open late at night and bake away for both bulk orders (ie the briosches that you eat in cafes) and by detail (ie for hte general public). I was told by my friend Kekko who is studying in Bologna that there are chains of nighttime bakeries, but they work more like fast food...

  • Underground Cave

looks like a basic cafe'/bar from the outside, but inside and downstairs, you can see the natural beauty, inside its a rustic style "brick and cave" locale. During the day, lots of students grab lunch here, but its also a nice place to have a drink in the evening

  • Summer Nights

a cocktail bar in a private garden right by the lake with tables outside and a romantic candlelit setting, its open year round, but its so much more of an experience in warmer weather (when it gets cold, only the indoor local is served).I highly reccomend the sex and hte city cocktail, and every cocktailis 5 euro.

Lecco Transportation

  • To Lecco by train from Bergamo

Getting from Bergamo to Lecco by train, couldn't be simpler. Trains run from the main station in Bergamo about once an hour and take only about 45 minutes to reach Lecco.Booking in advance isn't really necessary as you can buy the tickets without any problem in the entrance hall. I travelled on June 2, which was a national holiday and there was a...

  • Public transport schedules on public...

The train station at LeccoMy trip to Lecco happened on 02.06.2012, a Saturday and public holiday in Italy. The outward journey from Bergamo was problem free but trying to return later that evening, was quite a different matter. I bought my ticket having checked the time and correct platform for my journey. Then I found the platform and waited....

  • Agressive swans

Swans aren't nearly as naive as they seem. If they are in the bad mood, or disturbed in their activity, they are very agressive and love to scream and fight! They rise up and start swaying their wings, screaming and showing their sharp teeth! They can run fast and you better not let them catch you!

I noticed as I explored Lecco that there are bikes that you can hire. There are at least three places that I saw in Lecco where you can pick-up one of these bikes.
There is an information stand next to each set of bikes with a phone number if you need any more assistance.
By the looks of it, you pick your bike there and then, giving you more time to cycle around Lecco!

  • The classic view of Lecco

The classic view of LeccoAfter lunch I walked to the other side of town and now looking back, I saw the classic view of Lecco I'd admired on so many photos. This is the view of Lecco's campanile and duomo, with Monte San Martino, standing guard behind. Over here the promenade ends in a grassy and graveled area with an impressive war memorial and a...

The trees are very...

From my descriptions so far it's quite likely that one could forget that there is a town in Lecco as well as THAT lake. Well there certainly is a town and the little I saw of it looked very pleasant indeed. I walked directly from the train station to the lake down a steep street with lots of nice shops and cafes. Just before the lake I strolled...
