Lenno Local Customs
Mobile Department Store
In case anyone hadn't noticed, we Americans have a much different lifestyle than Italians! Case in point, shopping for "regular" stuff. Here we head off to Wal-Mart, Target or maybe the mall. In these small towns around the Lake, however, there didn't seem to be a lot of places to buy kitchen gadgets or underwear. What we realized was that rather than going to the department store the department store comes to them once or twice a week in the form of an outdoor market.
In Lenno market day was on Tuesday. We made a special effort not to miss this and we were pleased. The entire length of the lakeside promenade was lined with vendors selling all manner of everyday goods including, clothes, shoes, kitchen and bath wares, bedding, tools, crafts, even birds and, of course, food. My first thought was that this was probably second rate merchandise such as we see at home at flea markets but, in fact, the goods were basic department store quality products.
We bought several cheeses and a few snacks. Carol was looking for a bag to carry her art supplies and purchased a leather tote from a young African man. We latter realized that he was part a large network of African men selling luggage and hand bag knock-offs everywhere we went. No wonder everyone could afford Gucci!
