I have a 'thing' for alleys

alley leading towards Parish Church of Holy Benedi

Please forgive me. I love taking photos of alleys, especially ones with character as seen in the pictures. To me, the alleys are the essence of Italian small town life. They are functional, practical, but always exceptionally clean and well maintained.

    Lemons

Even if the name does not come from Lemon, it comes from the Latin word “Limen” or border, lemons are part of a village, that has escape from the Mediterranean area (or that was my impression ! Olives, fishing and lemons had been part of their life (just as if it was down there)

    The Parish Church

As we parked at the garage close to the road (we did not know there was another one at the lake front) we went down through the little streets without knowing what to see or expect. It remind me the little old Andalusia villages of Alpujarras.

The first thing we saw was this church

    Watch the Lemons Grow

    Lemon Orchards in Limone

Some people like to sit and watch the flowers grow, but when you come to Limone you do so to watch the lemons grow. After all, the town isn't called "Limone" for nothing!

As you approach the town by ferry across the lake your eye will immediately be drawn to a peculair series of structures that resemble girders or piling put in place as the shell or frame of a building in the course of construction. These are, in fact, the summer frames of thelemon orchards. They are built in this manner so that as the weather gets cooler the frames can be easily covered with glass and protective coverings to keep the lemon trees in the warmth that they need all year.

    Travel the Lake by Bus

by grimbolero Updated Jan 30, 2005

    Catching the Bus from Limone

There are water bus services from the municipal jetty to places all over the lake. Get a timetable from the ticket office and buy your tickets just before you travel.

Ask at your hotel for discount vouchers for your first trip.

The buses go all over the lake, but reserve a lot of time to go from Limone in the North to Sirmione in the south - it takes a few hours.

    harbour front

You are here to sightsee, not to play golf, or go deep sea diving. The key to Limone is the slow pace this little hamlet has to offer. Take advantage of it, and soak in the sights.

    end of October...amazing

Flowers are everywhere, and keep in mind that this photo was taken at the end of October.
This particular bouquet can be found right beside the little harbour, amidst the shops and restaurants.

The lake front was more commercial or tourist but this little house was still conserved at the end of the promenade, with its own little port.
