I have noticed that compared to people from other countries, Italians are very friendly and helpful with foreigners, so if you ever get lost or need to ask for directions, do not hesitate to ask the locals for help, if they can they will be willing to help you
Now, don't say I didn't warn you about the next subject:
Please don't get yourself embroiled in sticky political issues during dinner conversations just to impress that hot Italian hunk or lady friend/hosts. Worse still, in your ignorance, you uttered your open support to the North's claim to seperatism and devolution. This is a very sensitive issue as many people in Milan still want to remain part of the Republic.
Just keep quiet and talk about other mundane subjects like who's Monica Bellucci's new lover, or about the nice and not-so-nice experience you've encountered here on VT... or something like that. ;-)
Remember - politics is off-limit! Don't even touch on the subject of Mr Silvio Berlusconi during your dinner conversations. You are not an Italian and will probably never understand how they truly feel.
How come I know so much about such off-limits subjects, you wonder?
Let's just say that I've been extremely well-trained in this area by my Italian guru. ;-)
I've noticed that Italians don't buy into the whole stand-in-line concept. At a ticket counter, it's just a crowd of people and eventually you get to the front. It's the same at a buffet. You just walk up to what you want to get at. Granted, don't go knocking people out of the way, but don't be shy.
Italians are quite polite in general. In their speech, they respect this rule as much as possible. But I believe there is an exaggarated courtesy of Italian men against women, but you can't find the same when it is men against men. It is relatively or partially true, but it doesn't work for everyone.
It is an industrial city, full of culture, art, history, and fashion, amongst other things. English is not as readily spoken in Milan as it is in Rome, Florence, or Venice. Therefore, if you don't know any Italian, pick up a phrase book or acquaint yourself with some Italian phrases. Try your best with Italian, your effort will be appreciated.
