If you're coming from or going to an intercontinental destination, rain is the best way to travel to and from Milan. The main train station, Centrale, is large and has connections all over Europe.
Milan is serviced by two airports, Malpensa and Linate. To get from Malpensa to the city center, take the Malpensa express, an express train. Linate is much closer to the city center and buses can provide a quick ride to the heart of Milan.
Milan has an excellent public transportion system (buses, trams, metro) so make use of this network to get you anywhere you need to go. Be aware that if you're out late at a bar or clubbing, the metro closes at midnight-12:30ish so you'll have to find other means of transportation. Taxis are expensive, espeically at night when they charge an additonal (and legal) fee, so use them spairingly.

From Malpensa airport a good way to go to Milan is the Malpensa Express - a railway express link from the airport to Milan downtown.
Check Malpensa Express website(italian/english)
http://www.ferrovienord.it/webmxp/index.html
From Malpensa Airport to Milan Cadorna Train Station. From there you can take a taxi or any other means of transportation, cheaper than coming by taxi all the way from the airport.
The trains are new and clean with space for the large luggage pieces, since they are specific for connecting the airport to the city.
Check the ATM-Mi(Azienda Trasporti Milanesi-Milan Transportation Company) website at http://www.atm-mi.it , available in italian and english. There you can find:
- Timetables for buses and the subway
- Information about ticket types and prices
- Information about parking lots in Milan
A very useful page in this site(unfortunatelly for many people it's available only in italian, but it's not that difficult if you try a little) is the GiroMilano. Like a Mapquest site you can enter origin and destination addresses and get the best itinerary either using the bus lines or the subway system.

I was amazed at this beautiful train station and my boyfriend told me 'this is nothing' as we had many fabulous cities ahead and I had not idea what he was talking about. He was right though. On to Venice, Florence, Rome, Monaco, and Paris and back to London.

In my opinion the best way to travel to Milan is by train because by train you won't find as much traffic as by 0car.
In my opinion the best way to get around Milan is by bicycle and motorcycle because traffic is too high.

Absolutely not by car. It is (may also be) dangerous to ride a bicycle. The
best way to get there is by train.
In Milan, the underground and your own feet are the best solution.
The tramway in the picture is the oldest connection between Milan and Monza. Now there is a very traffic road

We arrived by train from Venice. Be careful to get on the 'ES' train and not the 'IC' train. We accidentially got on the 'IC' train and it took a lot longer because you make a lot of stops.
We took the bus everywhere we needed to go in Milan. Its a pretty big city so you can't walk to everything there.

It looks like something from some futuristic movie but it is in fact a Eurotram. Milan is only the second city - after Strasbourg - to introduce these high-tech rail vehicles. Along with the city's subway system, they provide an easy way to get around. No need to dice with death against the Milanesi in their Fiats who all think they are Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari.
