Lombardy Off The Beaten Path

  • The Lake District: Como, Maggiore, Iseo,...

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

The city of Como on the shores of Lake Como is an easy day trip from Milan - a 45 minute train journey from Milano Cadorna station, with trains running regularly throughout the day and late into the night. It's a lovely city - the historic centre and cathedral, the many shoreline villas, ferries to many other Lake Como towns and villages. (See...

  • Border Italy/Switzerland

    Como Off The Beaten Path

From Como it is easy to take the train to either Lugano or Bellinzona in Switzerland. They are both beautiful places and worth a visit. Bellinzona Since 2000 the three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbarco, have been an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bellinzona has a beautiful location. It is situated by Ticino River in Ticino Valley...

  • Villa Olmo Parco

Lago di Como Off The Beaten Path

There are many little passageways in the park behind the Villa. I spent an afternoon just wandering the little seldom-tred paths. Here is one of the parks lovely little secrets. 1) A little stream flows down from the mountain - 2) under the street that borders Villa Olmo - meanders through the property and runs into the lake (photo 3) We just had a...

  • Churches

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

The church of San Marco was first time mentioned in 1254 when the Augustinians built a Gothic style building on the site of an pre-existing construction. The church was dedicated to San Marco, the saint patron of Venice, after the help given by the Venetian Republic in the war against Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century. The church was...

  • Lakeside Towns/Villages

    Como Off The Beaten Path

I had been in VEnice and Trento for a drive around a few days before Christmas and ran out of time to see more of Lombardy so I flew back on New Years Eve and drove up along Lake Maggiore in beautiful sunshine and a beautiful sunset to Lugano and stayed overnight on the way from there to Como....and got up to lots of snow everywhere. The day was...

  • Vistas

Lago di Como Off The Beaten Path

Pigra is a tiny village high up in the mountains of Como which you can reach by cable car from the village of Argegno, or drive up. The cable car leaves every half hour and is a wonderful scenic experience. The views of the lake are wonderful from up high. We noticed many cyclists going up in the cable car with their bikes, in order to cycle down.

  • Shopping or Fashion District

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!! BURGLARS and THIEVES in a car park!!!!!!!!! LADRI nel parcheggio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday we parked our car in a car park and went shopping. • Brunate

    Como Off The Beaten Path

High up in the hills of Brunate is a house with a large plaque in front of it. A "famous" East European (I believe Bulgarian) writer should have been living here a while. Name: Penzo Slaveikov. Personally, I've never heared of the guy, but ... people who read his books eagerly, might see this house as well as a place to visit in Como.

  • Lakeside Towns

Lago di Como Off The Beaten Path

to make you appreciate the life of the local inhabitants of Lake Como. This lady who live in URIO was on the ferry with me - she had been shopping in central Como - at the o1 outdoor market by the historical center. What a delightful experience! Perhaps this should have been a "local customs" tip.......... Photo 1 - ferry dock at Urio Photo 2 -...

  • Navigli

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

I love Navigli and its canal or canals in the making. We passed excavation of the old canal before reaching the flower market which happened to take place the week we visited. We discovered a few good restaurants along the canal and would go back from time to time to sample them slowly.

  • Fiumelatte

Lago di Como Off The Beaten Path

Fiumelatte - down the road from Varenna. So named after the fact that the gushing water is frothy and white... it is the shortest river in Italy (250 meters) and in fact only runs from May - October or so they say. Apparently when it runs it gushes although it wasn't exactly gushing when we saw it. It still was worth a pleasant walk out of town.

  • Giardini Pubblici and city parks

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

If you are in Milan in May, make sure you try and make it to the annual flower exhibition at the Giardini Pubblici. Dozens of horticultural companies set up stands to display their lovely plants and flowers. It is not on a very large scale, but a nice way to spend an afternoon...

  • Castle and other monuments

    Milan Off The Beaten Path

The Victory Temple, the monument dedicated to the Milanese inhabitants who died in the First World War, was built between 1927 and 1930 according to the plans of the architect Giovanni Muzio. With a modern design, the monument looks like a lighthouse covered by ancient texts.
