Grotte di Catullo by croisbeauty Grotte di Catullo complex is situated approx. one kilometre from the Castle Scaligero. You can reach it by foot, following the marks, in about half an hour walk or by the electric train which starts in front of Terme di Catullo. The train ticket costs two euros in both directions. It is loaded with shops to buy souvenirs, clothes, and art. Sirmione can be very charming when it is not crowded; and very annoying when it is packed. I’d recommend trying to visit earlier in the day, and when the crowds pick up you can head further north on the peninsula for stretches of un-congested walks on the beach and the roman ruins at Grotte di Catullo. Also the weekdays should offer smaller crowds than the weekends with Italians visiting on thier days off.

Grotte di Catullo by croisbeauty According to the founds, the complex of Roman villa had over 20.000 square meters and occupied 241 meters of the terrritory. It seems that villa was build in two different epochs; prof. Mirabella Roberti discovered an Antiquarium during the excavations in the mid of last century. Leave a Comment

Grotte di Catullo by croisbeauty The peninsula of Sirmione, due to its position which penetrate deep into the Lake of Garda, was first colonizated in the ancient pre-Roman times. The only remeining traces, however, known as Grotte di Catullo, originate from the Roman times. Leave a Comment

Grotte di Catullo by croisbeauty Besides the complex of villa and spa, the remains of manufactures and shops have been found in this area too. The poet Catullo wrote about "grande oliveto" (huge olive area), "la via delle botteghe" (the shopping area), "l'aula dei giganti" (the hall of giants), etc. Leave a Comment

Castle by Carmela71 Once we cross the bridge at our right is the entrance to the Castle. This castle is from the 14th century constructed by the Lords of Verona over a roman fortress. A very well defended castle with the water around as strategic point. this area has been of strategic importance since the Romans that’s why they had a fortress here and the family Della Scala at the 14th century converted it in what it was, one of the most impressive ones of the area. Thanks Boris for the correction, my mind may had been on shops to put Scada instead of Scala LOL Leave a Comment

springs of water down there by sandysmith In 1889 a Venetian deep-sea diver, armed with a diving suit and special pumps from England, dove two meters into the lake. around the Catallus' villa. He was the first person to reach an underwater hot spring, which had been known to exist for three centuries. After several attempts he planted the tube into the rock and a sulphurous spray flew out, five meters high. Thus began the laying of 300 meters of pipes to carry the thermal waters to Sirmione. In 1900 the first spa opened.

castle view by sandysmith The castle built by the Scaligers on the foundations of the old eastern harbour is supposed to be a good one to visit - certainly looks impressive - but it was closed when we were there -(( It was built around 1250 for the lord of Verona, Mastino I della Scala. His family inherited their money and built a mighty castle here to flaunt their wealth and demonstrate their prowess.

castle moat by sandysmith There is a moat around the castle making it difficult to access to get a good picture. Infact the castle seems to join the peninsula together here as it straddles the land between the ferry harbour and the beach and small boat harbour. The castles defensive position was excellent because people could be spotted coming from the lake long before they arrived.

Caslte of Sirmione by rubbersoul75 The Dramatic entrance to the old town center is through the well preserved Castle. For a few Euros, you can tour the inside of the Castle, though there is not much to see- the views from the tower however may make the entrance fee worthwhile. The castle was built in the 1300’s by Verona’s ruling family at the time (the Scaligeri, Verona’s version of the Medici). It ) is cleverly designed with a protected harbor for protection of the original fleet of boats, as well as to provide protected fishing during rough weather. We spotted many large carp in the moat on our visit.
