At the end of the peninsula you can find this large roman villa. There is a museum where they show some of the objects founded on site and you can walk around the different areas. Some of them are under reconstruction.

Once we cross the bridge at our right is the entrance to the Castle.
This castle is from the 14th century constructed by the Lords of Verona over a roman fortress. A very well defended castle with the water around as strategic point.
this area has been of strategic importance since the Romans that’s why they had a fortress here and the family Della Scala at the 14th century converted it in what it was, one of the most impressive ones of the area.
Thanks Boris for the correction, my mind may had been on shops to put Scada instead of Scala LOL

Leaving the grotto you can find on the top this church surrendered by trees and vegetation.
Do not miss it.
It was constructed on the 8th century over a pagan one and has interesting frescoes in its walls.

To enter in Sirmione you have to leave your car behind and walk the small bridge, only authorised cars (or cars used to go through narrow old streets ) can enter. At our right is the castle.

Follow the panoramica path past the public lido and on towards the tip of the peninsula. For a while you can keep to the lake side but there are other paths leading up through olive groves to the headland.

Rocca Scaligera is the main site of historical interest in Sirmione. Encircled by the lake, the fortress, which dates from the 13th Century, stands imposingly the entrance to the town. It's well worth paying the couple of Euro entry for the views of Sirmione from the top.

The statue of Gaius Valerius Catullus, the great Latin poet (87 AC 54 AC) is situated in the heart of the town, on Piazza Corducci.
The most significant historical sight of Sirmione, the remains from the Roman times - Grotte di Catullo - is named after this great poet.
