Living nativity near Frasassi caves

by Trekki

Italy is a very religious country and consequently, the major holiday in Christianity, Christmas, is being celebrated with passion. Nativities are put upeverywhere and very often, nativities are being set up with people, called presepe vivente. No wonder that Genga’s locals have chosen Gola di Frasassi with its steep rocks and caves as a location to held their living nativity. But in contrast to others, this one is like a whole village, given the video I saw. Approximately 150 locals participate. They do traditional work of the early days like grinding grain, bake bread, do fishing in a little lake, spin wool, weave and sew clothes, a woman does belly dance (brave girl given the temperatures!), cook dishes etc. It all culminates at the top of the path, where the sanctuary is located in a huge cave. [The Santuario is officially called Eremo di Santa Maria Infra Saxa. Other names are...

Ancient Crafts Still Practised

by deecat

The Le Marche is an area where ancient crafts are still practised in artisans' worshops. Since this area is based on the small and medium-sized firm, these crafts are important to this region. We were in Tolentino where one of the oldest crafts [the dressing of hides] still exists. This craft goes back to the Middle Ages. Besides Tolentino, leather industries [such as the manufacture of shoes and bags] take place in Macerata and Fermo. A place I wanted to see, but did not, was Fabriano where papermaking is still vibrant. They even have a museum of paper and watermarks there! The manufacture of terracotta wares is still a thriving local craft in the province of Ascoli Piceno and in Appignano in the province of Caerata. One of the important areas for metal-working is the province of Ascoli Piceno. The town of Jesi has goldsmith workshopsThe most fascinating craft, I think, is found in the...

A Visit to Caffe' Meletti in Ascoli Piceno

by deecat

One of the finest memories that I keep of Ascoli Piceno is the afternoon that Allan and I spent at the Art Deco Caffe' Meletti that looks onto Piazza del Popolo. It seems to be the social and cultural meeting place for the locals. That is why it is often called, "living room" of the town.Since 1907 great personalities have savored the anisette liqueur produced by Silvio Meletti in this famous historical cafe. I also learned that this particular cafe has been the setting of several Italian films such as the 1971 "Alfredo Alfredo".Since it was a beautiful, somewhat warm afternoon, we sat at the outdoor tables and watched the activity of the lovely Piazza del Popolo.Like other buildings around the piazza, the "Meletti" has an arched portico. On the first floor, there is a row of windows of the same Renaissance shape as those of all the buildings facing it. When you walk into the cafe, the...

Famous houses & black...

by call_me_rhia

Famous houses & black MadonnaThe Marche is an area rich in history and culture. Scattered all over you can visit the native houses of several famous artists. In Recanati you will find the house of the Italian writer Giacomo Leopardi: you can visit the library there and see the collection of ancient books, as well as admire the window from where he used to spy on Silvia, his 'impossible' love. In Urbino, instead, there's the house where the painter Raphael (Raffaello) was born: this can be visited too. In Loreto, if you are religious, you absolutely have to make a pilgrimage to the church which hosts the statue of the Black Madonna. Photo: detail of Loreto's Monastery

by xaver

There is a popular quote that says: better a dead in your house then someone from marche(this italian region) knocking at your door. This because Marche region was a part of vatican state and, people from here had the due of going around the state knocking to the doors and asking for the taxes. Now people stopped asking for taxes but...they are not told to be generous yet!
