An enchanting evening was experienced on the 2nd night that Allan & I spent in Ascoli. At first we were disappointed because we wanted to eat at Trattoria Laliva which was suggested by the rave review of fellow VT friend, IandSmith. However, I had another suggestion from an Australian, Gavin Crawford, who had also visited Ascoli.

Located upstairs at 36 Piazza del Popolo we entered Ristorante Tornasacco.

It's an incredible location overlooking the beautiful Piazza del Popolo; secondly, the interior is lovely with local art & stained glass. Now, this was a much more expensive dinner than the night before, but it was well worth the money.

Note: Pane- coperto of 2 Euro per person is charged- bread. We found this to be "par for the course" in Italy.

Besides the bread (which we dipped in wonderful Virgin Olive Oil & grated cheese), we were served sparkling wine to start the evening. Allan & I shared a bottle of Rosso Piceno Superiore, which we had read about in several travel books. It cost 14 Euro & was quite mellow & delicious.

We always ask for "Aqua Naturale" or water without gas. The antipasto was quite an experience as it was prepared tableside via a portable trolley that held haunches of prosciutto, various sausages (including wonderful salami), & cheeses. We were also served marinated/pickeled vegetables such as onions, artichokes.

Our Primo Piatto was Taglionini with Lamb Ragout.
Our Secondo Piatto was Fritto Misto (lamb cutlet, zucchini, eggplant, artichoke, olives stuffed with tuna (breaded & friend, & cheese that was covered with flour, egg & sugar, then fried!
Our Contorno was Insalata Mista (Mixed Salad)
We also had the local special of Pecorino Formaggio (cheese) & honey.
    Next came Frutta (fruit)
Finally, we were served Dolce (dessert) of Crema Pinoli tart, served with vino passito & lemon.
Dolce deserves good Italian expresso, so that ended a fabulous meal here at Ristorante Tornasacco!

There were very few people in the restaurant on this Wednesday night in October (off season), but it was obvious that they, too, were enjoying this very special restaurant.

While in Sirolo, we enjoyed our Saturday night dinner at Ristorante Della Rosa. After entering the restaurant, you walk downstairs, which is really on ground level and looks out over an outdoor eating area. It was far too cool that night to eat outdoors. It was quite lovely inside with murals on the wall.

We spent about 2 1/2 hours enjoying a leisurely dinner, delicious wine, and yummy dessert.
I had the house bianco vino, and Allan enjoyed the house rosso vino. The bread was wonderful, and we enjoyed it with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and grated cheese. The Insalata Mista that I ordered was so large that Allan had to help me out.

We shared a pasta with noodles and all kinds of sea food. Allan ate the largest portion because I knew I had to go slowly and in small portions.

We also had Olive Ascolana which we had discovered in Ascoli Piceno. Another huge portion.

I had a delicious brick-oven 4 Formaggio Pizza that I managed to devour (except for two pieces that Allan devoured!)

Allan's favorite part of the meal was his large fresh fish He also had a side order of Spinaci (Spinach)

Of course, my favorite part of any meal is the Dolce (dessert). They were beautifully decorated with chocolate swirls. I took a grand photograph and accidentally erased it. I still regret that.

Our two desserts that we shared were Semifreddo Alle Noci and Tortino Al Cioccolato. With that we had Caffe and Cappuccino. What a way to end a perfect meal at Ristorante Della Rosa. The tab for all of this plus the bread and Acqua Naturale was 63 Euro.

    Allan's Buffett Treats in
    Osteria S. Nicola
    by deecat, 2 more photos
After an exasberating journey to reach Tolentino because of a detour along a major road, we finally arrived and were quite hungry.

So, we found Osteria S. Nicola Pizza Osteria and ate lunch. They were offering a buffett with various foods, and since Allan loves trying new and unusual items, he naturally chose the buffett (4.00 Euro), and I chose the Brick-Oven Pizza with tomatoes and Basil (4.50 Euros).

I also had an Insalata Mista (Mixed Salad) which was large enough to share with Allan ($4.00 Euro).

As usual, we were charged for the bread basket (1.50x2=3.00 Euro). Much to our surprise and delight, this bread basket had several different and delicious choices...bread, breadsticks, and crackers.

We also ordered aqua naturale (water without gas) that cost 1.0Euro.

The total bill was 16.50 Euro plus we left a tip.

I wanted to be sure to see The Church of S. Nicola, so I left to walk up the street. Allan stayed to pay for the lunch. Unknown to me, it took over 20 minutes for them to take his money!

I kept wondering where he was so I returned to our car, and he was not there; thus, I returned to the restaurant, but did not see him. I went back to the car, and about ten minutes later, he came to the car. Allan, unfortunately, did not see the wonderful shine of Saint Nicholas.

BE SURE TO SEE ALL THE HIDDEN PHOTOGRAPHS!

Allan and I really enjoy our delicious meal at Ristorante - Pizzeria "La Loggia" in Urbania. It was recommended by the girl at the Tourist Bureau, and we were glad that she told us about it!

Our total bill was 41 Euro and included the Bread and Breadsticks, Insalata Mista, Asparagi Parmigiena, Passatelli porcini, 4 formaggi Pizza, Costine d'agnello, One bottle of Acqua Natural, and Vino Rosso (1/4 lt.) and Vino Bianco (1/4 lt.).

Allan and I shared the local pasta (hand-made noodles with grated cheese, milk, egg, and the Portocino Cheese in a delicious sauce. But, we both felt that the noodles were way too thick!

Allan really enjoyed the Asparagus with cheese and butter, and I loved the Insalata Mista (mixed salad) that was so huge that Allan and I shared it.

I had the Quatro Cheese (4-cheeses: the usual cheeses plus blue cheese and what they call "soft cheese") Allan had a few pieces, and he, too, thought that it was delicious.

Allan also had Lamb Chops with Rosemary, and he raved about how good it was

At the end of the meal, they served us (for free) in iced glasses, a lemon cello sipping liquer That was the perfect ending to a perfect meal!

    Aceto balsamico art creation,
    and beef :-)

Now I would never describe myself as a gourmet, at least not when one wants to serve me frog legs or chicken feet or brain mousse.
But in Italy I learned the art of food and dishes. This has not so much to do with the very complicated preparation of unusual food, but more with the reflection back to what food and dishes were originally and in a way also getting back to original recipes. It is a simple cooking, but it tastes heavenly!!

When I arrived in San Leo and walked around a bit, I got hungry. I didn’t really look at the menus or searched the village for the best restaurant, but I think I found it – but by chance. Or because it is sitting just off Piazza Dante. So I have decided to eat, and more out of my wish not to embarrass the waitress by being deciphered as the German who only knows pasta and pizza, I studied the menu quite extensively and came to the conclusion that I wanted to eat “Italian”. Which meant antipasti, first and main course, desert and caffè. Oh well…. now that I write this, I can almost taste the dishes again….

I’ve chosen a fresh mixed green salad as antipasti (6 €), followed by gnocchi with tiny green asparagus and artichoke (7,50 €). The gnocchi were exactly al dente (no, I didn’t expect anything else) and tasted very much delicious. And as a main course I did order beef in aceto balsamico sauce (15 €). Oh my…. This is very typical for the region and is a kind of dressing (not so much a sauce) with very viscous aceto balsamico on top of the meat. Do I need to mention that it tasted like heaven?
I didn’t manage to eat desert, so I asked for doppio (double espresso). But I was surprised and delighted when the waitress came with a piece of cake, wrapped and ready to go with me for later during the day.

The taverna changes their menus quite often, so by now (see website, in Italian, English, German and French) the choices are different, but very much delicious as well. Oh yes, I could hop in train, car or plane right now….

I ate in the basement, in a very lovely decorated vaulted room. But there is also enough seating upstairs = on the main floor and outside.
    They are closed on Mondays.

If you have a car, you can drive south Ancona about 25 kilometers and join a very original restaurant in Recanati(the town deserves a visit too).
The restaurant is named 'la Donzelletta' and its dishes are all particular of this italian area, do not miss 'formaggio di fossa' it's a particular kind of cheese that you eat with honey.
If you are in Recanati centre, then the restaurant is about 4 kilometers far following Villa Musone direction.

Just ask them to let you taste their pork products and cheese, you'll be amazed.

In Sirolo (a very nice and original village) I higly reccommend you two restaurants: Sara in sirolo square(book!, they have just 5 or 6 tables) and Vittoria, that has a great view on the seaside, both are fish restaurants and in Sara's you can taste the typical fish soup (zuppa di pesce)

I will tell you the only dish I do not appreciate. They as many other restaurant 0of this area serve brodetto(which is a fish soup), actually only a few restaurant do that soup good and this is not one of them.Grilled fish is very nice.

Clandestino susci (not sushi!) bar: Fish-salami in Portonovo bay!
  • Satisfaction:
  • AngeloRecchi
  • By AngeloRecchi on June 1, 2007

  • The Clandestino susci bar is owned and run by Moreno Cedroni, one of the best fish chefs in Italy. The place is located in the enchantful bay of Portonovo, in Monte Conero area, 20 minutes driving both from Ancona and from A14 Ancona South exit. Although a bit pricey (think about 20-25 Euro for a light lunch), is definitely worth a try, especially for its fish salumi, that is fish cared like pork meat. In addition to their tuna bresaola, or Pesce Spada (swordfish) prosciutto, you can also have a small tin (like the usual tuna small tins) with octopus and some tomatoes, or monkfish and potatoes. Moreover, they open it directly at your table, and make you smelling how still fresh is the fish. Indeed, the work on that fish is made at the "Officina", in Senigallia, next to the Madonnina del Pescatore restaurant.
To conclude, after dessert, you can even have a cup of Espesso, which is the... solid version of the espresso, an invention of the Spanish chef Ferran Adrià, a sort of "spiritual" mentor of Moreno Cedroni. The Espesso is served with the holed spoon, to make it visible that the coffee doesn't spill.
A cigar and a whisky might be the best way to end up your time at Clandestino, the seaside at your feet.

My favourite dish at Clandestino is the small can with monkfish and potatoes, if it is still produced (I think so, my last experience there dates back to summer 06). Then, of course, the Espesso, a total different coffee, nothing to do with the delicious Espresso, which I like too.
