Osteria del Vecchio Olivo: Farmhouse restaurant

This restaurant is part of a bigger property that include a farm and some agriturismo lodgings.
It is located on the road that goes down from the center of Montecarlo.
We were nicely welcomed in a warm and comfortable dining area, they have different rooms so it never felt crowded as there are five six tables for each room. There is also a very nice veranda with an excellent view over the valley.
The whole building has been finely restored, it is decorated with farm objects, bottles and flowers. They use real tablecloths giving the restaurant a up scale feeling.
The waitress were helpful even if they speak a very small English.
They have a menu with about 8-10 choices for each course, they explained they vary it according to the season in order to use the tastiest and freshest ingredients.
The wine list is good and they helped us select a bottle according with our food choices.

Favorite Dish: As appetizer I had "Crostone di fagioli toscanelli e guanciale di cinta senese affumicata", it was slices of toasted bread with hot white beans and thiny sliced guanciale (cheeks fat) of Cinta senese, a local kind of pig breeded in Tuscany. They completed the dish with some fresh red pepper berries. It was delicious and very easy to reproduce as I have successfully done several time at home.
As maincourse I had pig fillet roasted with apple sauce and mustard seeds. Another big thumbs up!

Osteria del Vecchio Olivo: Tuscany Delight

by painterdave Updated Mar 27, 2012

We drove around the area of Montecarlo and also through the town, but ended up just a bit below it at Vecchio Olivo. This wonderful osteria turned out to be a good surprise and we were pleased to have made the choice to stop without knowing anything about it.
The osteria had plenty of room, and attentive to detail. You get a warm feeling and they seem to enjoy their customers, being very talkative and jolly.
The food was better than expected, the menu had many items from which to choose.
I would like to return here in the summer and eat outdoors as they have a great view. It was too cold for us that night to go outside.
Plenty of parking. Clean and efficient. Not expensive.
    Tuscan cuisine.

Favorite Dish: The menu had so many different things that it was difficult to choose. See photos for some choices.
If I get a chance to return to Montecarlo... this would be my first choice.
I have included two photos from their menu, so that you can see the prices and items.
This is a family run place, they know what they are doing, and they do it well.
The first item shown here is a special dish. I liked it so much that when we got home I found the ingredients and made it. Tastes much better than it looks....and if I told you what it was made of, you might think.. maybe not, but if you have a chance to order this, do not hesitate.

Wonderful First Course! prepared perfectly dolci appetizer page primi page

TAke the winding road to get to the village and park on the way up and into it before you enter. There are spots along side of the road that suffice and it looks like parking inside the walls may be scarce, or reserved.
