Any nightclub or disco: Beware Of The Terms
  • Tip Rating:
  • If “England and America are two countries divided by a common language" (Bernard Shaw), then what kind of trouble would an American tourist get himself into when he thinks the Italians speak the same English as he does?

In the US, X goes to a bar when he wants to meet people and have a good time. If he wants to meet people, dance and have a good time, he goes to a nightclub. Under no circumstances would he dream of going to a disco. (John Travolta did that once; the experience was recorded and deemed sufficiently embarrassing enough for all mankind.)

In Italy, X wants to meet people and have a good time. He heads to a bar. Except bars is where the locals hang out: old and young, families and singles, and on occasion, minor children with their parents. Bars serve drinks, but no one is drunk. In fact, being drunk is considered poor form. (Where “fare bella figura” is the motto, one lives and dies protecting one’s good image.)

Everyone stands around talking, nursing the same glass of wine for hours. Some only have hot chocolate. The children enjoy a gelato or bite-sized pizza. Everyone seems to have a good time, but this isn't what X wanted. He leaves.

X decides that he'll have better luck at a nightclub. The doorman tells him he has to buy an entrance ticket. €20 seems a bit steep, but he pays anyhow. He walks in and sees a room full of beautiful women. One woman approaches him. He buys her a drink. They talk. After 15 minutes, she asks him to buy her another drink. He asks her to dance. She tells him to buy a ticket from the man at the desk.

A ticket to dance? Yes, that's how Italian nightclubs work. When one goes to a nightclub, one pays for drinks, conversation, and dance. One can meet people and have a good time only if one is willing to pay for the companionship.

Poor X! Where can he go to drink, dance, and have a good time without losing his shirt? A disco, of course! :-) Discoteca is where people dance. And don’t worry, they don’t play disco music; the Italians don’t like the movie either.

  • Tip Rating:
  • This was an free live concert at the main square of the town, Piazza Maggiore. The music was performed by Italian musicians and their international guests and it was outstanding.
Here on Piazza Maggiore there are free concerts every day starting from 12:00 to 1:30 in the morning. The atmosphere is just great, everybody is enjoying in the music, cold drinks and friendly people all around the square.

No dress code, everything is allowed exept to be totaly nude. Don't forget to take some beers with!

    Umbria Jazz: International Jazz Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • During the Summer season, there are number of events whole over the Italy, the question is what to choose.
For Opera lovers it is Verona and its Summer Opera Festival at Arena.
For those who love Jazz, it is definetely Umbria Jazz at Perugia, from July 10th to the end of the month. I was there in the Summer of 2003 and it was extraordinary. I've seen Keith Jarrett in live-concert and a number of excellent musicians performed their music free at the squares of the town.

Cafe La Torre: Step into local life in Florence
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cafe La Torre in Florence is a real gem in itself but an absolute must each Friday night. On the opposite side of the Arno than Gli Uffizi two bridges out of the immediate centre, the cafe bar is off the beaten tourist track. A large outdoor area caters for forty people or so with further seating indoors. Between 7pm and 9pm each Friday night the place is thronged with locals who avail of the special offer. One sits and orders a cocktail or 'aperitivo' from the extensive cocktail list at about €10. This may seem a little steep but the up side is that great dishes of fab Italian food starts to arrive to a buffet table and punters are free to help themselves.
Apart from the great food, the fact that the cafe attracts mainly local people is a big bonus. You can sit back and get a real feel for how Italians socialise.

    Drinking tradition
  • Tip Rating:
  • Drinking is a tradition in the meetings
there are also special VT members who has this reputation of big drinkers!
    like IngaA!!!
however piccolina also likes to show this passion for drinking
but as I always say she is moderated, and not every reputation is justificated :-)))
anyway, she was the queen of the party so I don't care if she really drinks a lot or not, actually she was driving that night, and I was the drunk one, despite the Russian vodka during the 6 years that made incresses my tolerance to alcohol :-))
