I will say, that going out in Italy was expensive. Italians dont seen to be heavy alcoholic drinkers. Summer time in Italy means plenty of 'Gelatto' (Ice cream). I remember a great 'Gelateria', very close to Piazza Navona in Rome. Most big cities in Italy, are easy to walk about, and I did not find much problem getting back to my hotels.Discos seem to have a very steep cover charge, which may or may not include your first drink. It may sounds like a Cliche, but Italians are smart dressers, and they will tend to dress up quite nicely, especially if going out to the opera or classical music concerts. Even when going out to restaurants or nightclubs people in general tend to dress up very smartly.
Eating anywhere, preferably outside. Italians eat later than Americans, so restaurants often don't open for dinner until 7:30. Have a leisurely meal, then go somewhere else for a gelato (even small towns will have a gelateria), then people-watch at the nearest piazza.
Any restaurant with a good reputation. Best to go to dinner about 9pm and enjoy a leisurely 3 hour meal. What with an appertif, wine, appetizers, pasta, salad, meat dish, dessert, coffee, and conversation, it shouldn't be less than a 3 hour event. Savor every moment amid the chatter of Italian voices and the well fed clientele.
