Piazza del Popolo

by JREllison

The Piazza del Popolo is a square in Rome, Italy. The name in modern Italian literally means "piazza of the people". The second oldest Egyptian obelisk stands in the center of the square. The obelisk was brought to Rome in 10 BC by order of Augustus and originally set up in the Circus Maximus. It was re-erected here in the Piazza by the architect-engineer Domenico Fontana in 1589 as part of the urban plan of Sixtus V.On our last evening in Rome we wandered out from the Spanish Steps toward the river and discovered this delightful Piaza

Italy's best kept secret.......

by sharpo

Visiting Calabria... within a day you have fun in the sun and hiking in the hills....eat anywhere and everywhere for a fraction of what it costs to eat anywhere else in Italy.....Best place to spend a Sunday.... the open air market in Camigliatello in the Sila (Cosenza, Calabria)...savour all the local products from cheeses, to wine and salami....try the local chestnut bread (on an empty stomach). Buy fresh from the local producers and then find a spot to have your outdoor lunch.

look on the hills

Castaldo, Montereggiano, Pecciola We found these little towns just driving with no plan in mind. We also found a village with a prison that unfortunately did not write down the name. It was on the way to Pecciola. We arrived for a festival that was being held in Pecciola and were served a fantastic meal and entertainment all for 9 euros a piece. The whole town had tables set up with wine and water "Frizzante" and Naturale. An experience we would never had found unless you just wonder and look.

Watching over Firenze

by Dominiques

A lot of people who visit Firenze don't have the time to discover the wonderful nature in Tuscany. To get a taste of it and have an excellent view on the city and the valley, you can go to a nice little place called Fiesole. It's very near to the city and you get a taste of the typical north Italian nature (cypresses all around!). As almost every place in Tuscany it has a nice church. Ideal for a relaxing day out of the city.

tuscany is in my opinion the must see and most beautiful region in italy. i would reccomend taking a trip to the airport in florence or wherever you may be, rent a car with the intention of driving through greve and maybe even to sienna. we stopped in the beautul town of greve, which is known for its beautiful and unique street markets. while there we samopled amazing wine and ate fresh tuscan fare right there on the streets. the trip is well worth the money.

Il castello di Verrès in the Valle d'Aosta

by Paul2001

The Verres Castello was the most imposing of all the castles that i visited in Italy. This is because of it's dominating setting on the slope of the valley. The castle is by no means pretty but rather austere. This was meant to be a defensive fortification instead of a palace retreat. From afar the castle comes across as a massive blockhouse. During my visit as you might be able to tell by the first photograph, it was raining and cloudy. The castle peered down at me from the mist as I scaled up the road to the castle. This would have been a pleasant walk on nice day. During this walk I imagined that the castle looked like the home of some evil lord as it did not look very welcoming. In fact when I got there, there was hardly any staff there to let me in and I had to patiently wait for somebody to get to the entrance kiosk. Furthermore I was the only tourist here. Once inside, I felt that...

The Domenico Tramontin e Figli Boatyard

by madamx

A different twist on riding in a gondola in Venice; see how they're built. We had the good fortune to accompany friends to the workshop of Roberto Tramontin -- the major gondola builder in Venice. His family actually revolutionized the design of gondolas to it's modern day design.Gondolas have been painted black since the 1500's when Venice was going through an economic recession. It was considered ostentatious to have a brightly painted boat, and it was decreed that all gondolas be painted black. It was a bit disappointing when he told me the metal decoration on the prow -- contrary to colorful stories of it representing the Doge's hat and islands of Venice -- actually means nothing, it's just a decoration. There are 8 different woods used in building a gondola; each wood having it's special use in each section of the boat. Sadly, gondola building and repair is a dying art. When I asked...

Volcano watching

by Aquacraig

Get down to the bottom of Italy and across to the Eolian Islands. The island of Vulcano is a dormant but steaming volcano and there is a hot mud bath there to soak up the rich minerals that are apparently in the volcanic mud. Hop off the ferry and start climbing !The island of stromboli has an active volcano and can be seen at night very clearly from neighbouring islands or on Stromboli itself.Cruise boats leave from the island of Lipari for an evening of volcano watching.
