RICETTO DI CANDELO (in Biella Province) is one of the most amazing places visited in 2007. If you consider I was in the Biella provice just for work, it has been a really great experience for which I should thank a very nice CPA (certified public accountant=tax advisor) coming from Varese.
Ricetto is a fortification built to defend local population, it was not used by local princes to oppress people. The first document speaking of Ricetto dated back mid 1300.
Ricetto means “shelter”: a place for the poor goods and chattels of the local families, for their corn, for the barrels of their light wine, a little sour, but tasty. The strength of the local population, friendly, at the same time determined and independent, is here witihin these battlemented walls, with the lanes grid formed, where the one floor small houses are one next to the other as if they want to pluck up courage or more simply to keep company one another.
You will feel like in Middle Ages, the street are made of rounded stones (forget to utilized high heels) and everything, in the external walls, is original. Nobody is permitted to live there nowadays. But it's just a lucky experience to have the opportunity to visit it.

Biella's Duomo was built in 1402 on the site of an earlier church but was radically restructured at the end of the 18th century with the addition of the Gothic-like portico (1826). The inhabitants of Biella I met were not very proud of this construction. They considered it out of the place.
