When Italy was a poor country and many people migrated abroad, also Cannero had its migrants. Most of them, in the XIX century, went to England to seek their fortune, but they did not cut their ties with Cannero. On the contrary, several of them became benefactors of their birthplace. This bridge, for instance, was built with money donated by the "Canneresi" of London.

I explained in another page how and why the soil in this area is especially suitable to grow azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias. In Cannero it is especially the camellias that dominate the scene. Every year, at the end of March, there is an important exhibition of camellias.

In Cannero the climate is very mild, because the mountains shelter it from the cold winds, it is kissed by the sun for many hours a day, but it has also its share of rain, so this area is particularly suitable to grow plants and flowers of various kinds. Local and exotic plants grow together with a beautiful effect. For instance in several gardens I have seen rambling roses embrace the stems of palms.
I have even seen ivy on a palm tree, pity I did not have my camera with me.
