If you visit Cannobio you cannot fail to notice this church, since it is situated on the lake front and near the main piazza. In this same place there used to be an inn, where in 1522 many witnesses saw blood drip from a small painting that represented the dead Jesus with Mary and John. Soon a small and modest church was built there, and in 1578 it...more
On one of her morning runs, Joan discovered “Fonte Carilina” up in the hills outside of Cannobio. This mineral spring is where an archbishop of Milan in the 16th century, drank and had his all ailments cured – kidneys, blood, and heart. The healing waters became so popular throughout Europe that the whole town of Cannobio developed to accommodate...more
There is actually little to do in Cannobio, but it is a great place to wander round with a lovely quiet atmosphere. I visited on a weekday in late September, and it feels like it would be very atmospheric to visit when it is very quiet out of season. Have a look at the photos of the streets and the historic churchmore

Just your regular pizzeria by the piazza, which BTW is right in front of the piers.Nice and quiet place.Good and reliable service - money talks. Here I finally lost my heart to pizzas, esp. pizza Margherita! Please note that in Italian you absolutely have to spell the name with the H, otherwise you pronounce it like in gem.Taste the Cinzano as an...more
There is one ferry a day from Stresa/Intra. This is the 11.30 (from Stresa), which arrives at 13.20. The return ferry is at 17.20, which does leave a good afternoon to spend here after your lunch. As a bonus there is a hydrofoil on a Wednesday (both directions). The Stresa service only runs on certain days in April/May/October and not all in...more

This is a tiny little shop with different nice and tasty cheese.
What to buy: Try the local Gorgonzola or Mozzarella - yami - or my favourite the Mascarpone.
What to pay: not too expensive from my point of view
In 1896, during the night between January 8 and 9, just past midnight a sudden and very strong storm sank the patrol-boat “Locusta” near Cannobio, off the Cavalla point.
Twelve men, eight seamen and four policemen who were doing their usual patrol service at the border between Italy and Switzerland, lost their lives. The memorial you see in my picture commemorates them.
There is a mystery about this tragedy, because no relic was ever found, nor any of the bodies, as if the boat had vanished with its crew. New searches were done after 1975, using modern technology, the last attempt was done in 2006, but without any success.
The level of water in the lake is very changeable, according to the quantity of rain and especially on the quantity of snow that accumulates on the surrounding mountains in winter and melts in springtime. Due to this fact, the villages by the lake have high stone embankments. However, the administrators of the Comune in Cannobio forgot this, and during a dry spell that lasted for a few years they used the tax-payers’ money to create a park, with benches, kids’ playgrounds, soccer and volley-ball grounds , in a green area where the level of the ground is considerably low.
I remember how it looked in 2007, when the level of water in the lake was the lowest I had ever seen, but when I visited again in May 2010 the scenario was the one you can see in the picture.
There are camping sites in Cannobio that are close to its beaches, so they are on low-level ground, however you should not be afraid of sudden tides if you go camping there. In fact any increase of water from the tributaries is monitored, so when the water level is expected to increase people are alerted several hours earlier.
