Virtual tours and planning

by ant1606

The free version of Google Earth provide amazing details for Piedmont region and its Alps. Geographic features can be combined with road layover and I frequently use this tool to plan trips and mountain treks. Views can be rotated, tilted and zoomed to any desired level. For instance, you can see and "follow" roads going up alpine passes in 3D environment.Very useful.

Turin 2006

by Polly74

The awarding of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games to the city of Turin, the result of close collaboration between the various institutions, has been seen as a unique opportunity to revive the fortunes of Turin and of the entire Region. An investment of about Euro 1500 million has been financed by public authorities for the architectural work to host the 2006 Games, while Euro 1000 million has been raised by private sources (sponsors and television rights) for their actual organisation. The Olympics are part of a vast programme of events, which will make a strong statement about Piedmont's new international image and the territory will inherit cutting edge tourist structures. There are about 60 projects, including sports facilities, infrastructure of all types, Olympic villages for athletes and the media. The plans for these works have been designed to contribute to the development and...

A vocation for food

by Polly74

Piedmont is a region where food comes first, with a host of specialities in an area which boasts centuries' old culinary traditions and outstanding, top quality local produce and raw materials, more of which have been granted protected, guaranteed status than in any other region of Italy, and which are used to make products which are much appreciated throughout the world. The wines of Piedmont need no introduction: Barolo and Barbaresco are the kings of a court thronged by whites and reds, like Brachetto, Gavi, Gattinara, Ghemme, Roero Nebbiolo and Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and Asti Spumante, which sells millions of bottles a year all round the world. Just like Vermouth, which was invented by the Torino producer Carpano, then made famous by the Martini and Cinzano brands.Meat, to start with. "Razza bovina piemontese" beef has the lowest cholesterol content of all and is distinguished by a...

Piedmont in a nutshell

by call_me_rhia

Piedmont is one of my favourites regiorn in Italy: I especially like its hilly areas, of which Piedmont has 2: Langhe and the Monferrato. It's surrounded by mountains to its west, north and south - and Lonbardy lies to its east. Other than the hills, Piedmont has some interesting lake areas (Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta), which look like a world apart. The regional capital is Turin, while other important cities are: Asti, Alessandria, Cuneo, Novara, Vercelli, Biella and Verbania. My favourite part is the Canavese area - which is also the one I go to regularily. I like its rolling countryside dotted with beautiful castles, and its wineyards that cover the hills - some great wines are produced there, in particular the lesser known but amazing "Rustia".

This region is home to the ski resorts known collectively as the Milky Way. The venues recently played host to the winter olympics so the facilities are top-notch.
