Small harbour under the snow

This a picture of the tiny lake port of Intra under the snow. Intra (part of Verbania) is situated in the western coast of the lake, in a central position. A very important local street market happens on Saturdays, being a point of attrcation for all the tourists in the area and people from the close Switzerland region of Locarno, Ascona, Brissago also come because of its relatively cheap prices and wide choice of items.

Take a walk along the typical small streets of the historical center. There are many beautiful spots to admire. Here you can see houses of 17th - 18th century and the old church of San Vittore with its dome and its bell tower.

Go to visit Villa Taranto, one of the riches botanical gardens of Europe. The park, that stretches about 20 hectares of area, was donated to the Italian State in 1939 by the Scottish Captain Neil MacEacharn. In 1930 works of reconstruction began and created a great variety of environments ( a tiny dale, drivers, flowered terraces, a small waterfall, a fond, a conservatory) where more than 30.000 species of plants are gathered, some rare and exotic. Villa Taranto is frequently hosts international political encounters, and it is the habit of the guests to plant a plant with an indicative plate of the event. So a part of the garden is a sort of memorial park tied to historical encounters.

The small harbour with the typical column is near the new landing stage. In the past was a shelter for fisherman's rowing boats. Nowaday gives a good reception at sailings and motorboats. The story goes that the column made of granite was destined to Rome for to build a church's arcade, but,.when they relized the measures were wrong, it remained in Intra as a sentry of the harbour.

La Tettoia from the new landing stage

If you go for a walk along the lake-front you can see the old landing stage built in 1859 and restored few years ago. From here sailed the ferry boats for Laveno and the boats that reached every destination on Lake Maggiore. The old landing stage is an iron construction called 'La Tettoia' and is a symbol of Intra.

A boat of Navigazione Lago Maggiore

Thanks to its position, Intra is a good starting point for every destination on the lake or in the inland. From here you can sail to go to visit the three beautiful islands of Lake Maggiore: Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Isola Pescatori. You can take a tourist ticket that you allow to visit the islands and the towns of Stresa and Pallanza.

This is a bit more than just a bookshop: Alberti represents a centre for local studies on cultural, geographical and historical features of the Lake Maggiore area.

What to buy: You will find lots of books about those issues and all kind of maps you will need to travel and hike around.

Every year, the people from Ramello climbs the slope and they are well received in Vignone, during the day, traditional presents are exchanged: while Ramello offers a new hat for the Municipal guard and a brenta (around 30 litres, carried on the back) of local red wine, Vignoneses organise a common lunch made of rye bread, green salad and boiled eggs.

A friendly agreement dating back to 1424!
On April 25th, the villages of Vignone and Ramello celebrate the friendly solution of a very old dispute. It was settled down in 1424, after years during which the two communities have been fighting for the use of the grazing lands and the right of use of the woodlands shared by the two.

The landscape from my home

Fondest memory: I like to live here. It's a quiet place, its climate is agreable and mild even in winter, protected from winds and fog. I like to walk on the promenade looking at the lake. Think I could'nt live in a place where there is no sheet of water!
I like to sit down when I've finished my work and to look at the mountains at sunset.
