Lago d' Orta Things to Do

  • banana boat powerboat trip with capitan...

you can not miss the banana boat rides and powerboat of captain jack on Orta's Lake! I found an advertisement on the shores of Lake Orta in the summer 2010. we were 10 friends and we tried all afternoon the fantastic adventures of Captain Jack on the lake!we made a lot of turns departing from famous Miami beach. We had fun all afternoon . it was...

  • Sip wine and look at the lake

This is the smallest (and Westernmost) of the lovely Italian lakes. It a little less touristed and it's just beautiful. The food, the people, and the buildings--well, of course, it's Italy! the little village of Orta San Guilio is the perfect place to have lunch and watch the people, the boats, and the island.

  • PELLA

Pella is a lovely town on the opposite side of the lake, just across of Orta San Giulio. There are boat connections with other places on the lake. There is upper town and a very steep and curvy descend to the lower town, on the lakeside. It has a lovely promenade which featured an interestng exhibition of photograhs from the local photo club. It...

  • REFLECTIONS

Play with your camera a bit (especially if it's digital, it doesn't cost a bit ;-) and take photos of late afternoon sun reflections - on the water, windows, glasses... The lake is magical at that time!

    more
  • THE TOWER

The only way to reach this tower is hiking. The path is so near and not suitable for cars. From there you'll face the most beautiful view on the lake! it's worthwile to make an effort on the hot day as well. :-)

    more
  • CLIMB TREES

Climbing trees at the beach is very rewarding, not only for the comfort and wonderful view, but also as an emergency solution when you lack a wonderful swing to mount, like that guy I already talked about.

    more
  • LURE THE DUCKLINGS

Little ducks are so funny, when you throw stones they rush to you thinking you're throwing food! This way you can lure them to come close to you. They're very cute and friendly and not afraid. But don't be cruel, have a piece of bread or something to feed them once they come to you.

    more
  • SUNSETS

Stay for a sunset at the lake. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and relax, it's very inspiring! Most of the people would be gone by then (silly!), so take advantage of some quiet moments.

    more
  • THE REAL BEACH

The beach I adore is made of tiny pebbles, almost sandy, with lots of lush green behind if you prefer shadow to hide from the sun, but still want to be beside the water. It's almost deserted, which is a puzzle! It's much more beautiful than anything! But people prefer to be on the concrete platform near the bar, or in the camp if campers. Better...

  • THE CONCRETE BEACH PLATEAU

Immediately after Orta San Giulio there would be a lovely beach resort and soon after, camping. it's in the small cove behind Orta San Giulio peninsula and you can see the tower of Villa Crespi from there easily. It has a small beach bar with ambulance and wide stone plateau for those who prefer urban beaches rather than natural ones. I go for the...

  • CANOES

Canoeing is VERY popular at Orta lake, especially among tourists. It's possible to rent canoes at the camp as well as the town. There would be indications where to do it.

  • SWING

Real hedonists don't cease to let their imagination free. This guy made a swing above the water, tied up between trees. Some people really know how to enjoy themselves, lovely!

Lago d' Orta Restaurants

  • PONCETTA

This is my favourite restaurant at Orta lake! it's not the most beautiful, but the most special, with very warm, domestic atmosphere, wonderful cuisine, lovely view on the lake, with balcony in flowers and truly delicious dishes! Take a home made dish that looks like lasagne but it's not, it's called CRESPELLE, it's soaked in cheese and pasta made...

  • "L'Ustaria" Cà dal Rat - for snobs!

This is a very beautiful restaurant on the way to Orta San Giulio, but it's super classy and fancy, and for snobs. It's very pricy and you need to have a reservation (otherwise it's impossible to eat there). The atmosphere is stiff, artificial... Pity, for the scenery is truly breathtaking!

    more
  • CHOCOLATE PLACE

This is a tea & chocolate bar, they serve the greatest variety of delicious tea and chocolate, do not miss! It's in the downtown of Orta San Giulio, you'll pass by it in the main street.

It is better you get the big boat. It is even cheaper and you have time not only to enjoy more the view but to take better pictures of the impresive sunset.

On the streets you'll find lots of touristy shops selling typical goods of the area, like olive oil soaps, various spice, scents, pasta, and lots of accessories.

(This is more sort of a joke, but anyway... )
Loch Ness is not rhe only lake with a monster. Beware of the strange beast lurking from the water! You're never safe! And don't swim far away from the shore! There are many legends among locals about what's hiding in the lake...

Lago d' Orta Tourist Traps

Orta San Giulio is the main port and the place to take the boat to the island - Isola San Giulio. However, beware as there would be greedy boat rivers who'll offer to take you in their boats for a high amount of money! They'd be very kind and friendly, but don't fall for that. Stick to the public service.

Lago d' Orta Off The Beaten Path

  • WELL

I saw several wells like these in the Sacro Monte San Giulio, probably once they had their purpose, nowadays they're just a decoration.

    more
  • ROTONDA

Another lovely viewpoint at Sacro Monte is called ROTONDA SORA LUNA ET STELLE (sister Moon and stars) as it says on the stone beside this plateau with bench. It overlooks the other side of the lake, the beginning of it, and not the central part where is the island, and it's a bit more narrow view, but still beautiful.

    more
  • VIEWPOINT

One of the best viewpoints at Sacro Monte is near the church. There is a plateau with benches overlooking the lake and Isola San Giulio. It's better to be there in the morning, because in the afternoon the shadows are bad as the sun is on the opposite side and the island and the lake are not well illuminated.

Lago d' Orta Sports & Outdoors

Lago di Orta (Lake of Orta) and surroundings is just one of my favourite spots for mountain biking. In spring when there is still snow on the northern side of the Alps, there is already nice and warmy sunshine around Lago di Orta. You can either do just some exercise with your road bike or climb your first mountains of the season with your mountain bike. In summertime, it may get a little to warm for mountain biking, but there are many trails in the woods and don't forget the lake itself. It's always there for a refreshing bath at the end of a great day on your bike. And then there's fall - one of the best time to go the region. Most of the summer tourists have gone and the place is now more quite. And the scenery is just to nice to be true. You have to see the living colours!

One of my favourite spots: Monte Mottarone (see also the pix)

Lago d' Orta Favorites

  • BAMBOO

Like on all the other northern Italian lakes, Lago d'Orta also has bamboo growing around! Very unusual for the 45° north latitude climate, and alpine surrpundings, but bamboo grows joyfully together with other exotic & Mediterranean plants, like palms, olives, citrus fruits... This was even on the top of the hill above Orta San Giulio!!!

  • MEADOWS

The hilly areas of Orta lake are full of meadows and fields, with orchards and other cultivations. This one was right beside Sacro Monte Orta San Giulio complex, a private property.

    more
  • WOODEN STICKS

These wooden sticks, parts of the pier have another application apart from being a place to tie the boats up to the shore. They are a landing spot for sea gulls, who adore to stand on the top of them! Pity I didn't catch any on act!
