Vercelli Things to Do
Perhaps the most outstanding building in Vercelli is the Basilica di Sant'Andre, a superb example of Romanesque architecture. Although nobody knows who was actually responsible for building the Basilica, it is thought they were associated with the school of Benedetto Antelami.
Although the builders are unknown, what is known is that the Basilica was commissioned by Cardinal Guala Bicchieri and there is a carving of him offering St. Andrew a model of the Basilica. Also, you can see the tomb of Tommasso Gallo, the first abbot of the place.
It is certainly an impressive building inside although I found it somewhat sparsely decorated compared to other similar buildings I have been in. Certainly, none of the the original stained glass windows are in place any more.
The Basilica was graced with the presence of Pope John Paul II in 1998 when he addressed the people of Vercelli.
Whilst certainly not the most impressive religious building I have visited, it is certainly worth a visit if you are in Vercelli.Related to:

Italians are known for their love of coffee, and indeed many of the words associated with the beverage worldwide are Italian, capuccino, latte etc. Vercelli, like every other Italian village, town or city is absolutely brimming with coffeeshops, cafes, or whatever you wish to call them. All of them seem uniformly good and so it seems almost churlish to pick one, although I was taken to this place by a friend who lived in Ivrea for some years, and she certainly picked a great place.
It is the 0161 cafe on on Via Galileaos Ferraris which is a small street thereby precluding the al fresco arrangement so beloved of Southern Europeans. Inside, however, it is a wonderful little place with friendly staff, a good selection of alcoholic drinks and, of course, some excellent coffe. There is also a selection of light meals and some wonderful pastries. It appears that local artists also use the 0161 as a sort of gallery, displaying their works for sale on the walls. It all adds up to a very pleasant place to spend a little time.
Well worth a visit.
