Car rental at Rentasmart
Hiring a car can make travelling around Puglia much, much easier. By the time we got to Lecce we really appreciated how renting one would make places more accessible. Plus, we really needed one to get to Matera.
Luckily, we found out about this company at the tourist information in the centre of town. They had cars available and they turned out to be both cheaper and more convenient than the alternative, Budget. Rentasmart were happy to deliver the Smart to the tourist information offices within an hour and they then picked it up from the train station when we returned it to Lecce. There is a charge for pickup away from the agency, but apparently this does not include convenient spots in the town.
The car was fairly old for a rental car (2001), but it was reliable. You'll pay for extra kilometres done over the daily limit of 100k, but we found that at EUR .15 per kilometre, it was cheaper than Budget even despite a lower mileage limit. Other cars are available, all Smarts. You can also rent sat navs and bicycle carriers.
We were very happy with the service and value provided by Rentasmart. Friendly and efficient. Check the site for prices.
Train to Lecce
The train to Bari from Lecce runs frequently, around every 30 minutes. The ride takes around 2 hours, but the express train is faster.
We arrived from Bari on our last day and then took an overnight train from Lecce to Rome. The ride took 10 hours and was ok, even though there was a lot of noise because the train stopped many times. Despite the noice it was a nice way to save some time.
- Budget Travel
Don't go too far into the centre of Lecce. Parking is scarce and very short stay. Not only that the one-way system took us 30 minutes to negotiate just to get back to our starting point. If you find a car park before you find the city, use it and walk the rest of the way
