Foggia is the closest train station to San Giovanni Rotondo, so you’ll want to take a train from Rome to Foggia. There are several trains a day, but if you’re planning a day trip (that will be a loooong day), the best solution appears to be a Eurostar in the morning. Takes 3.5 hours to get to Foggia.

The one-way fare: 28.9 euros with the Amica fare (requires purchase at least by the day before) vs 36.10 euros standard fare in second class (which is just fine).

In general, you don’t need to buy train tickets much in advance, but you could take advantage of the Amica fare if you purchase they day before and use the Eurostar train.

You’ll note that there are other trains…some are slower and may cost less.

Use this website to check on train schedules and fares:

From Foggia you take a SITA bus to San Giovanni, a trip of about an hour.

This website gives some advice about when to go, which days are busiest, where to catch the bus, etc.
