Le Botteghe di Donatello: There's a Reason It's Across from the Cathedral

by DueSer

The restaurant itself looks like a typical Tuscan place but the fact that it is located right across the street from il Duomo means that the window seats all have an amazing view. What makes this place so special is the food. I have never had a better meal in my life. I liked it so much, I ate here every night I was in Firenze and I ordered the same thing! It was panna e proscuitto - basically tortellini stuffed with proscuitto and covered in an alfredo sauce with chunks of proscuitto. It's a heavenly meal - hence why it's right across from il Duomo, I guess;-) Panna e proscuitto!

Brek: Try Brek if you are exhausted ...

by craic

... with struggling with impudent waiters, mysterious menus and copertos, and just want something wholesome and quick to eat.The Brek chain - I saw it in Rome, Venice and Verona - is the easy budget buffet option. It seems to specialise in breakfast in the english/american style - but it also does lunch and dinner. The beauty of it is is that you can see the food, you can see the price, you pick what you fancy.Help yourself to soup and/or the salad bar - then go and look at what they are offering in the way of pasta etc.Look, it is not great food, but it is quite palatable and it is reasonably priced and you don't have to dread an imaginative bill and waiters working hard for tips.We also had lunch in a buffet in Bologna which was not Brek and that was even better than the Breks we tried. It seemed to just be called Ristorante Self-Service.I often just want soup and salad for dinner so it...

Papa's Cafe: Good Food Good Prices Great Atmosphere

by Fig33

A nice little family owned restaurant located in a small yet busy alley near the Piazza Navona. My wife and I were travelling with our newborn daughter Savannah (she was six months old at the time). We just happened upon this little restaurant quite by chance and decided to rest our feet and have something to eat and drink. The owner saw Savannah came out introduced himself and asked if he could pick her up, we said yes and he proceeded to talk to us about our travels and his family etc. all the while entertaining our daughter. When it was time to go we paid for our food (very reasonable especially for such great service and quality) but he would not let us pay for our drinks, said they were on him! We went back for lunch the next day and again the owner wouldn't let us pay for our drinks! I'm travelling back to Rome in October with my niece this time and will visit this restaurant many...

Dishes delight 1 – Il Cantico (Umbria)

by Trekki

Il Cantico was the only option to eat during my stay at Abbazia San Pietro in Valle. Yes, of course, I could have gone to Ferentillo to look for other options – but then again why should I? The restaurant had a good reputation in my books and I was delighted to find it also mentioned in my “Gebrauchsanweisung Umbria” (a book written by British Patricia Clough and published by Piper Publisher, something like “manual for Umbria” – see general section). So I took a shower and dressed up (I didn’t even dare to enter the restaurant in my usual boggy clothes, haha). When I entered through the door, I was also delighted to hear Brazilian music and the waitress (wife of the chef) was from Brazil, as it turned out later. Which was good, at least I could properly communicate with her (my Italian isn’t good but Spanish worked fine). Already outside when I looked at the menu, I decided that I will...

Redibis (Bevagna): Maybe the best restaurant in Italy - Redibis

by Trekki

So how did I discover this maybe best restaurant of Italy or even Europe? Once again I would like to thank British journalist Patricia Clough, who wrote the book Gebrauchsanweisung Umbrien in this special series of “operating instruction” book series of German Pieper Publishing. In one chapter she wrote about the Slow Food movement and mentions that Filippo Artioli , the young chef of Redibis in Bevagna, collects all he wants to use for the evenings’ dishes in the surrounding meadows and forests. I was thrilled to see that Bevagna is not far away from where I wanted to base myself during the second half of my trip and as soon as I was there (in Poggio dei Pettirossi – see accommodation), I set out to find Redibis. This wasn’t easy, as it is tucked away in a side street, but near Hotel L’Orto degli Angeli as I realised then. As usual in Italy, the earliest time to book a table is 8 p.m. I...

Ambasciata d'Abruzzo: Abruzzo food in Rome

by melosh

I was first taken to this restaurant in 1970 by an Italian professor and the head of the National Italian Antiquities Department because they wanted to share with us students an affordable place loved by Italians. Except for some refurbishing of the exterior this restaurant does not seemed to have changed. Even the waiters seemed to be the same although our waiter had only worked there for 18 years. The relaxed Italian ambience and the qulaity of the food of this popular family owned place makes it worth the little extra effort of taking a taxi to get there. The anti-pasta platter is especially good as a starter. There is a set price feast but I think both times we just order various dishes and shared. Everything was great.

Piccolo paradiso: Best hidden gem in Casalmaggiore

by halfdays

Ate at the restaurant 3 nights. The waitress spoke minimal English, we spoke hardly any Italian. But we managed to communicate and asked for her recommendations for food, we were not disappointed. She said that if we did not like her recommendations, we could always reorder at no charge. Thats customer service. Seafood spaghetti, pizza, and the baked fish

Not so bad and very tasty :-): Prices of meals

by mariaschmidt

Hi We have just been in Italy for 10 days and I can say that if you have a meal in a restaurant of trattoria and only take pasta a salad wine and coffe it is around 15 Eur but if you want a Steak or Fish or other main dishes (pasta in Italy is considered first course although it is a satisfactory meal in itself in my opinion) than it is more expensive and it can be around 25-30 Eur per person.I did not find a great difference in prices. Venice is only more expensive if you want to eat in San Marco or other super touristic place ( which I don't think is a good idea) Anyway the good news is that as you probably know everything is very tasty and we enjoyed all our meals and the Gelato of course (2 EUR for 2 gusto )So enjoy ciao Mary

La Grottino /a: Deliciouso

by KB&MC

Some of the best food we had in Riomaggiore. Nice, laid back atmosphere. There's even a few options on the menu for kids (eg fried calamari) Carpaccio of fennel and cuttlefish. Might sound strange, but it is oh so, delicious & light.Any of the pasta dishes - the best we've had in Italy so far.Buridda: prawn/fish stew, slightly spicy, and a bit fiddly - peeling prawns and shrimps with a knife and fork - but very, very yummy. Can't remember the names of our desserts, but they were good. And the perfect accompaniment to Sciacchetrà - the dessert wine. (Be warned - 8 euro a glass).

Dau Cila: Lunch, dinner or nightcap

by KB&MC

Right on the (little) port of Riomaggiore.Sit outside and watch the fishermen pulling in their boats, along with the other tourists just arriving in town or heading out to catch a ferry.Service is friendly, and the food is delicious.(We ate there twice) Carpaccio de polpo - carpaccio of octopus. Light, fresh and tasty.Or, the ravioli. The espresso's are perfect and you can try the local Limoncello.
