Alfredo's: The Orignal Alfredo!

by jessicabjewett

Tucked away in a Roman alley lies Alfredo's. Where the wine is plentifal, the tables covered and the staff knowledgeable and interesting. Our waiter was so entertaining with a wonderful sense of humor. We laughed our way through our first experience dining in a foreign country and did our best to speak some sloppy Italian. We were the only American's in the restaurant, the rest were locals with a taste for quality. I had pasta with tomato sauce but the rest of the family indulged themselves in their specialty, Pasta Alfredo. They told us the story about how this was the place where the original Alfredo sauce was invented and made famous. Our waiter brought a cart out to our table and prepared the pasta in front of us. It really was a nice touch.

Ferrara - Osteria Il Postiglione

by ant1606

Awaiting for time on my side to post my impressions about the beautiful city of Ferrara, I just want to give out a brief dine-out comment. As of early April 2008, I had the chance to walk in Ferrara city center at about dinner time on the occasion of a business trip. Without any advance information on dining options and nobody around to be asked for hints, and being the surroundings of the Estense Castle pretty blank in terms of restaurants except for the ubiquitous McDonald's, on this rainy night I managed to find this place which is less than one minute walk from the mentioned stunning castle. The doorstep was busy with a disabled wanna-be-patron's wheelchair, he couldn't get in due to a missing ramp. Not a good sign, but hunger pulled me in.I was welcomed by the unpleasant, unmistakable smell of sewer despite I wasn't sitting next to the washroom. There wasn't much to choose from the...

Grom Gelateria: Best Gelato In Florence (2 of 2)

by meltedfrootloops

Again, gelato, and Grom in particular - so much better than just "ice cream". Grom isn't just in Florence - in fact, according to their website, they opened up a shop in NYC last year, and they also have shops in Turin, Venice, Casale, Asti, Milan, Bergamo, Mestre, Padua, Mantova, Parma, Genoa, Bologna, Perugia and Ferrara. But I've only been to the Florence shop, and can only testify to that one in particular. This place is heaven. The gelato is the perfect consistency, made with the freshest and best quality ingredients. Their philosophy revolves around organic, fresh, in-season ingredients, no unnatural color or preservatives of any kind. As a result, their flavors change often and they have a special "flavor of the month" (right now, March 2008, it's Pear and Chocolate). The prices will run a little steeper than a less-satisfying gelato (US $4.75 for a small) but it's always, always...

Vivoli Gelateria: Best Gelato in Florence (1 of 2)

by meltedfrootloops

I categorized Vivoli under an "Ice cream" theme because it's the closest, but gelato in general, and especially the gelato at Vivoli, goes waaaaaaay beyond ice cream. It's not too expensive, they have unusual flavors, and it's so, so smooth. It's on Via Isole delle Stinche, close enough to Santa Croce to enjoy your gelato while sitting on a bench looking at the lit-up Santa Croce at night. Everything. Go back a LOT and try every flavor.

Osteria S. Niola Pizzeria-Osteria Ristorante: What an Excellent Lunch in Tolentino (Marches)

by deecat

After an esasberating journey to reach Tolentino because of a detour along a major road, we finally arrived and were quite hungry. So, we found Osteria S. Nicola Pizza Osteria and ate lunch. They were offering a buffett with various foods, and since Allan loves trying new and unusual items, he naturally chose the buffett (4.00 Euro), and I chose the Brick-Oven Pizza with tomatoes and Basil (4.50 Euros). I also had an Insalata Mista (Mixed Salad) which was large enough to share with Allan ($4.00 Euro). As usual, we were charged for the bread basket (1.50x2=3.00 Euro). Much to our surprise and delight, this bread basket had several different and delicious choices...bread, breadsticks, and crackers. We also ordered aqua naturale (water without gas) that cost 1.0Euro.The total bill was 16.50 Euro plus we left a tip. I wanted to be sure to see The Church of S. Nicola, so I left to walk up the...

Ristorante Tornasacco di Galie' Maria Antonetta: Romantic Evening in Le Marche

by deecat

An enchanting evening was experienced on the 2nd night that Allan & I spent in Ascoli. At first we were disappointed because we wanted to eat at Trattoria Laliva which was suggested by the rave review of fellow VT friend, IandSmith. However, I had another suggestion from an Australian, Gavin Crawford, who had also visited Ascoli. Located upstairs at 36 Piazza del Popolo we entered Ristorante Tornasacco. It's an incredible location overlooking the beautiful Piazza del Popolo; secondly, the interior is lovely with local art & stained glass. Now, this was a much more expensive dinner than the night before, but it was well worth the money.Note: Pane- coperto of 2 Euro per person is charged- bread. We found this to be "par for the course" in Italy.Besides the bread (which we dipped in wonderful Virgin Olive Oil & grated cheese), we were served sparkling wine to start the evening. Allan & I...

Maccas in Italy

by craic

Yes, you will find the Scottish restaurant reasonably widely distributed in Italy. The food doesn't taste the same as it does in Australia and there are some different choices, but it is as cheap as it is in Australia.Another difference that I noticed is that the staff is not necessarily very young. The one I would go to occasionally in Rome did not sell coffee. But it did sell wine and beer which I noticed was a big hit with the lunch time crowd.Of course their public conveniences can usually be depended upon. No squat toilets, no locked doors (which some cafes have even though it is against the letter of the law - all cafes are supposed to provide public toilets) no filth and squalor, or lights that suddenly go out on you so you crash into all the cleaning equipment piled in the corner. Oh, I have got stories.Anyway, the rest rooms are usually salubrious. And the food is much as you...

any one you choose: the italian diet

by Zeldap99

i call it the Italian diet. Eat whatever you want. Since you are in Italy, you walk everywhere, because it's so hot you drink nothing but water all day long, therefore you eat less, even though you don't realize it, you're sweating therefore losing pounds and don't even know it.So eat pizza, pasta, canollis, gelato, and more pasta and more sweets and pizza, and lose weight! I was gone for 2 weeks outside of the U.S. and lost over 10 pounds without even trying. you can't beat that! heck, i think i may have to move to Italy, no wonder they are all so skinny. Want to know how to spot a tourist from the US? they are out of shape. i'm telling you I could tell who was from somewhere else, because they were overweight, how horrible is that? all those italians are all so fit! who knew wine, pizza and pasta could be so good for you. everything

Ristorante Pizzeria La Conchiglia D'Oro: Great Seafood

by CassiopieaSeeker

When we stayed in Vicenza we went to this restaurant twice, it has great food with great serving sizes, the seafood is fresh and the atmosphere is lively, the only drawback is that only a handful of people speak english and since the food is so delicious it gets pretty crowded. I had the steamed clams, and the seafood Paella was to die for, my husband had the oysters on a half shell , which he loved.
