L'Olimpo: Wonderful Food, Magnificent View

by Gone2Roma

This is a restaurant for a special occasion, or to comemmorate your last evening in Roma. Bring money; it is not inexpensive. Wine is served by the bottle only. The view of Roma at sundown in unforgettable as the restaurant sits atop the Hotel Bernini Bristol. The clientele tend to dress well for dinner, here. Men wore sports coats, etc. Not all had ties, but it would not be over the top. I had fish (trout, as I recall). It was superb. The presentation is top-shelf. The wait staff are professionals in every respect. The appetizers were delicately delicious. The desserts were perfect. A wonderful sweetness that was only slightly larger than bite-size. The entire meal, soup-to-nuts, including the bottle of white wine was $160 U.S. Just me, a single diner. Was it worth it? Indeed, every penny. I will return during my next visit to Roma.

Antico Ristorante Pagnanelli: Superb Regional Cuisine - Locals Eat Here!

by Gone2Roma

The food is described as "creative, international, and regional." The surroundings are very rustic and warm. The staff are welcoming and patient. They are very knowledgable of the menu and wine selections.During the time when the weather allows, the outdoor dining provides stunning views of Lake Albano to one side, and the Mediterranean on the other. Everything I have eaten here was superb. You can google them and see their menu (Italian) online. You will not be disappointed.

La Congrega, Osteria del Tempo Perso: Florence - A Dinner that completes a Perfect Day

by chuang1111

We loved this intimate eatery where the service staff really paid attention to our comfort. The wine selection was excellent. Gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce had the perfectly texture, soft but not gooy. Pappardelle al funghi (pasta with procini mushroom)...great aroma and very flavorful. The salad...refreshing. We went there two nights in a row and ordered about 1/2 of all the items on their menu. Everything was prepared with such care and perfection. We had duck and we had pork and we had seafood. We had Tiramisu and we had their signature Tuscan cake. We ordered wine, appetizers, first course, second course, salad, contorni, and desserts and caffe macchiato--the whole Italian dinner--which is the way I would recommend it to everybody. Carpaccio di Manzo. It's a personal thing; I've always felt that if they got the carpaccio right, then it's a good restaurant.

Trattoria der Pallaro: No menu eating

by italcat

"You'll eat what we feed you". And it is a great thing. No decisions to make. No need for reservations if you come early. We had lentils, meat, pasta wine. Loved the food and the matron and after five courses we ended the evening with hugs all around. Indoor/outdoor on quiet side street. Doesn't matter since there is no choice, but everything was yummy!

Piacere Molise: A Family Run Neighborhood place

by italcat

Husband and I went here twice. We went in because the outside looked inviting and it was clear someone had put some thought and work into making it look nice. Also it was near our Room, a very friendly place and popular with the locals. We tend to eat early for Italians and invariably we are usually among the first to arrive at a place which was the case here. But it certainly doesn't stay that way and by the time we left it was packed. It had a very family friendly vibe and I think it was a second home to the children of the proprietors. They hung around waited for their dates and talked on the phone with friends, looked bored and ate dinner at the corner table. Our waitress's name was Angelea and she loved that we tried to order and speak in Italian. We saw her on the street the next day and had a great big hello from her. Joe (husband) had veal with sage lemon procuitto and I had big...

Michelangelo: The Best Pasta Ever!

by momdawg

This restaurant is on top of a dome overlooking Florence. The restaurant is outside and the food, ambience and service are unbelievable! One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Florence. The past (any) is unbelievable. They also have amazing salads. Lots of food, great service, and no one is in a hurry to leave. We sat and ate, drank and enjoyed the view for hours!

Harry's Bar: You gotta have a Bellini!

by carolstolt

Harry's Bar is a landmark in Venice. If you do nothing else but get a Bellini at Harry's Bar, it would be enough. They are truly very good. In fact, when we got back to the States we bought the ingredients and have made them for ourselves at home. This restaurant is VERY pricey. Don't sit down to eat unless you are prepared to pay dearly - even for lunch. The luncheon menu for ONE was 87 euros!! That's right, you read it correctly! And it didn't include the cost of the Bellini: 15 Euros. The food was extremely good and I was impressed with the service and glad that we did it but I don't think I would do it again. Been there, done that, kind of thing.

I Fratellini

by madamx

The "Little Brothers" have been serving wine and sandwiches at this place, literally a kiosk, since 1875. There are no tables, it's standing room only, and they even provide little racks to put your empty wine glass on. Tucked away on a side street not far from the Piazza della Signoria, this place is a bargain. Sandwiches are around 4 Euros, and it's a great place to stop by for a quick lunch if you are in the area. I categorized it as fast food, as in the space of 3 minutes, your sandwich is in your hands. There are 27 different types of sandwiches, and depending on who you get, service can be brusque or very friendly. We happened to get the guy in my picture and he was extremely crabby, he wouldn't even give us change when we paid for our sandwiches! Luckily, his cheerful colleague made up for it. I ordered a Porchetta sandwich, and it came with a generous pile of tender, juicy...

Pasticceria Boscolo Maria

by madamx

Our hotel in Venice was located along the Strada Nova in the Cannaregio area; a busy main shopping street that has more locals on it than tourists. For some reason, numerous bakeries line the Strada Nova, but Boscolo Maria has something special -- the most delicious little pizzas! They're simple, just tomato sauce and a slice of fresh mozarella placed neatly in the middle, baked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.Locals and those in the know start lining up about noon when Maria and her daughters bring these little beauties hot out of the oven and they kindly keep any leftovers warm under heat lamps for the latecomers. At 1 Euro each, 3 make a nice, light meal. They also have many other deserts and baking for sale, but we didn't get a chance to try them. Judging on the pizzas, I'm sure they would be just as yummy!

Reginella

by madamx

In Naples, you can't leave without eating pizza. Our friend Fabrizio was horrifed that we would want to go to Da Michele, the oldest pizzeria in Naples. "There is no formal seating, and it's crowded and noisy" he protested. He basically admitted he wouldn't be caught dead there. "Well, where would you have pizza?" I asked him. He drove us to an upscale part of Naples and Reginella. Set on a hillside overlooking the bay of Naples, I could see why he would choose this place. Windows that are actually glass doors can be opened on warm nights and looking over the water, Vesuvio loomed right in front of us. Disappointing thoughts of telling people I didn't eat at Da Michele flew out of my mind as we were seated in a cheerful blue room overlooking the water; Vesuvius came into clear view as the sunshine burned off the rainy mists surrounding it. Besides a full range of pizzas, Reginella also...
