Haggling over price...

Prices on goods are considered to be the actual selling price. Haggling or negotiating on price within shops is frowned upon, and considered to be in bad form.

If you pause long enough while making your decision, many shops will offer a discount if the purchase price is high enough. If no discount is offered, take a short walk to the next shop. If you are determined to make the purchase, you can always return.

Give a greeting upon entering a shop...

It is customary to give a greeting to the shop owner upon entering his/her establishment. San Marino may be a Republic, but the inhabitants are still Italian, so a simple 'Buon giorno' (good day) would be appreciated.

As you leave the shop, you might say 'Arrivederci' (good bye) or even Buona giornata' (have a nice day).

After 4:30pm, which is now considered evening, you change your greeting to 'Buona sera (good evening)
