One cashier attempted to short change me, by claiming I gave a 5 euro bill instead of a 20 euro bill. He seemed to be adament about the denomination, but quickly changed his tune when my friend Graziella came to my rescue. He didn't realize we were together until she inquired what the problem was.
I've been in retail for many, many years, and it is almost impossible to make an accidental error like the cashier was claiming. It was intentional, pure and simple.
The lack of linguistic skills put an innocent tourist at a disadvantage, and people are people, crooks are crooks, regardless of nationality.
