San Quirico d'Orcia Things to Do

This old travetine church falls just short of being a full duomo, but is fascinating never the less.

The three doorways into the church are built in different styles with mediaeval, baroque and gothic symbolism in the portals. The larger northern dooway enters the nave at the end, and passing through, you are immediately struck by the rather astonishing altar, and around the walls are large, colourful paintings and impressive wood-carved panels.

If you are interested in the history of church art in Tuscany, get a good guide to each area - a good one for all independent travellers is "Val D'Orcia - Artistic and Historical Guide" by Robert Patrizio available in the Pallazio Picolomini in Pienza. The guide is also uselful for confirmed Philistines like myself, who just know that it "looks quite nice".

This little wine cellar in the centre of San Quirico D'Orcia sells its own produce, with tasting always available. This is a quiet town, so don't be suprised to find the shop empty, of not only customers but shopkeepers! The shop is actually the wine production cellars for the vineyard, so has fermentation tanks and mysterious pipe-work opposite the simple sales bench.

The vineyards are located just south of the town on the hills of Vignoni (literally "Colline Di Vignoni") on the Azienda Agricola Sampieri Del Fa', and also produce high quality olive oil.

The wines, Orica Rosso and Orcia Bianco, are available by the bottle, depending on vintage and production. The matured D.O.C. grades are rich with a good bite. The simpler I.G.T. grade Vignolo is a young fresh wine great for general quaffing.

What to pay: Bottles of Vignolo are €3, while Orcia Rosso and Bianco can be €5-10 depending on vintage. You can also buy Vignolo from the tap at just €1.70 per litre.
