La Muraglia: Not just a bad day!

Rest assured, Paisleypaul, it was not just a bad day! We found ourselves seduced by La Muraglia's lovely location and the opportunity for alfresco dining on a balmy evening. Wanting to try a local speciality, I decided on pork 'in the Algheran style'. I think it was called porcetta, but frankly porcate (junk food) would have been a better description! The dish consisted of bones and a combination of burnt and flabby skin, completely devoid of meat or crackling. It was inedible. The accompanying grilled vegetables were stone-cold and swimming in oil. My husband's ravioli was singularly indifferent and the prawns tasted as though they had come out of a can. I can state with confidence that this was the worst meal I have ever encountered. Our complaints were brushed off - needless to say we called for the bill immediately and deducted the amount for the offending item. A fellow diner on the next table had the same dish and was heard complaining vociferously as we departed. Fortunately, we went on to enjoy many fine meals elsewhere in Alghero, which is a splendid town.

Favorite Dish: The bread rolls weren't bad.

Zebra Cafe for maloreddus

This is a small bar-diner near the beach which is open for drinks at night and does modest snacks and a modest set menu. Seating to the steet side and Ok for a grubby lunch time break from the beach!

Favorite Dish: Decent salad to be had but best bet is the authentically Sarde malloredus pasta of tomato. meat and saffron. Cold Tuborg 'birra alla spina'

Seating aplenty outside, this is a reasonable but not outstanding ristorante in the Centro Storico. We ate in our shorts and sandals straight from the beach, with it being outdoors you don't feel self concious about it. This was our first lunch in Alghero, when we go back in August 2007 for 17 nights probably try it for dinner one evening.

We were hurrying to get the train to Sassari and they wrapped up our sweet - local baked iced biscotte - to go when we asked

Favorite Dish: Seafood spaghetti was served wrapped in tin foil which was a nice touch.

LA MURAGLIA (di Monte Mario): Maybe we got them on a bad day ?

We had left it a little late to dine - but far from too late- and without booking anywhere ended up having to take our chances here as third choice. La Muraglia is on the (walled) seafront in the old town , for a seat we had to climb up two stories to the open-air converted roof space.

Could not get my much sought after sea urchin spaghetti 'ai ricci' , although I failed everywhere else to. Wonder if this is any way seasonal or I was just out of luck ? Decent seafood, decent fillets, OK wine and sundries, deplorable service from a totally inefficient stroppy waiter who seemed obsessed with criticising the one waitress who was running rings around him.

Eu74.50 total for what was, not 100% terrible, but the most forgettable dining experience we had on the front of old town.

Favorite Dish: Seafood starters were my favourite everywhere in Alghero ! Sweets were nice.

Could all be an awful lot more pleasurable

Nice seating at Cafe Latino

One thing that surprised me in Alghero was the inexpensive cost of a cup of coffee – maybe this is so all over Sardinia, but I am used to paying at least €2 for a coffee in a café at home!!

Generally I didn’t pay more than €1 anywhere in Alghero, but this particular café that we stopped at one day charged more like the English prices I know! Probably because the view over the harbour was so nice as was the fancy seating provided to admire it!!

Casablanca: Great Pizzas!

Possibly the best pizza we have ever had!

Just a shame the service was not too good - we could see several people receiving the incorrect choice of food around us!! I think this was because the wait staff were too rushed & not paying enough attention to what the customers were ordering!

In a great location in the centre of the old town. Sit inside or outside in the sun & while away an hour or more at lunchtime, or make an evening of it!

Favorite Dish: The pizzas really were excellent but there was a lot of other choice on the menu such as salads, pasta dishes etc.

Bella Napoli: From good to awful service!

The location is very good, outdoor seating in a very nice square in the centre of alghero. The pizzas are very good and are very good value, the rest of the menu is not very good for the price with a few exceptions (The Mussel soup is very good).
I went to this restaurant about five times in the space of about two weeks and was quite impressed with the service, the waiters all speak excellent english and were usually quick and helpful. One waiter called Giorgio was very helpful and efficient as was the manager Giuseppe.
The last time we went was on our last day before we went to the airport. It was quite early about 5pm and we were pleased to see the restaurant was open, however it was one of the worst restaurant services I have ever seen. The manager was not present, there was one waitress on (blonde hair with a nose piercing) who was extremely rude, she took our order whilst on her phone! Two other couples came and sat down and waited for about half an hour for her to come and take their orders before they walked off, from what I can gather the waitress was inside talking to her friends. After we had finished our starter we waited for about 20 minutes for our next course, even though there was nobody else in the restaurant. I would not go there again on a future visit.

Favorite Dish: The Pizza's are very good quality and good value, ideal if you want a cheap eat. The rest of the menu is OK but nothing special. The Mussel soup is good as are most of the pasta dishes. Was not impressed with the seafood salad, it had clearly come straight out of a frozen packet. Avoid anything on the menu that says "may contain frozen products if fresh products are scarce" because I believe most of the ingredients in these dishes are not fresh at all. The spaghetti with clams is another one to avoid, as it was just plain pasta with a few clams in, very dull.
To sum up, if you want a cheap pizza consider this restaurant. If you want a full menu, there are many better places in alghero to go.

Ristorante Novecento: Late night pizze

Pizzza, and more. When we were delayed getting to Alghero it was 11pm or so on a mid-August Sunday as we went looking for a meal. It was looking as if we had missed the boat, until upstairs from Via Roma we found the 900. There was live music wirth a twist -as well as some of the rather younger crowd of diners, all waiters waitresses and cooks took star turns doing the vocals !

Favorite Dish: What's called "Pizza Alghero" is topped with clams, prawns, mussels and octopus

Good pizza, good wine, good waiting, you can probably get the same laods of other places but central locale catering to latecomers (we were not the last) and the singing made it a surprise night for us. Does more than pizza, but we would certainly go back for another

VICERE: Another jewel in the old town crown

Loads of covered seating outside, waitresses dressed like maitres d' , one of the very good restaurants in old town, it is representative in having a good and imaginative menu with seafood and fish leanings.

A high 20% service charge is applied to your bill - this still did not make the total any more than average but worth knowing when you work out how much to tip

Favorite Dish: I had the saute mussels and clams to start and mixed seafood grill after. The insalata italiana (tomato/mozzarella/rocket for the tricolore) and lamb also proved hits. Excellent local, i.e. Alghero, white Sauvignon, beer water and two deserts at Eu75 for both of us.

Glad I did leave a tip despite that service charge - checked the bill later and they'd missed the deserts!

The really good thing about this place was that it was a veryshort walk from the 'start' of the beach (if you come in from the Centro Storico) and it was obviously quite smart - but we were still welcome for a lunchtime pizza in our sand and sandals

Favorite Dish: Nice tuborg beer with my favourite napoletana (anchovies) pizza. Had fruit to follow, served whole on ice, we ate some and tooksome back for our afternoon tanning session

Next time going to try this at night. Lovely fountain at the entrance.
