The beach area starts about 10-12 minutes walk from Old Town along Via Garibaldi / Via Lido, about 15 minutes walk for hire sun loungers and ombrellone
Nothing to explain away, just showcasing some photographs

The Aquarium in Alghero is the only one in Sardinia and is open until very late in August, about midnight, although they do close for the siesta. Admission is about Eu7 adults and concessions for children.
Worth a look although not a huge collection, puts in about 30 minutes I would suggest, rather than the 'hour or two' optimistically predicted by lonely planet.
Zoos over the world range from the atrociously criminal to the quite good. To be honest, I felt some of the tenants were in spaces too small or too overcrowded, but I decided it was no time to charge, gung ho, to the moral high ground... when I remembered that I was eating some of the species, such as catfish and octopus, and I realized that to be caught and then end up here rather than on a platter seemed like a result!
Overall - worth half an hour, but don't expect too much

Dating from the XVIth century, the Cathedral has been constructed in Catalan Gothic style. Notice in the picture the octogonal bell tower and pyramidal cuspid. The original facade has been replaced in 1862 and preceded by four Doric columns of neoclassic inspiration.

Alghero is blessed with the long white sand beach called Maria Pia beach. It stretches for a few kilometres along the road to Fertilia. It is family friendly as the water is shallow for quite a way before it gently shelves. Several hotels, bars, cafes & shops can be found just across the road along the whole stretch of the beach. On the beach are non-motorised boats & pedalos etc. for hire.
There are many places along the beach where you can hire sunbeds – they even have their own unique built in sunshade, & of course there are the more traditional parasols available. The cost for 2 beds & 1 parasol varied between €10 & €12 for a day (insist on a discount if you arrive after 2pm though!)
The water is crystal clear & a beautiful turquoise colour. When I visited in early June I found it to be quite cold, but a friend who went just 2 weeks later thought I was imagining it as it was ‘apparently’ warm!!

If you want to while away some time & watch the world go by, then this bar is a perfect choice. In the heart of the old town with friendly efficient staff, comfy seats, cold beer & lovely inexpensive Italian coffee – I particularly loved the litlle cow cream jug & just had to take a pic of it!!

The old city of l'Alguer is small and charmer. Don't wait for big monuments, but very firendly streets. A pleasure to do a walk in.
La ciutat vella de l'Alguer és bonica i petita. No espereu grans monuments, només carrers agardables. Un plaer fer-hi un passeig.

This is a cave, just in the see level, as dig in the stone of a cliff. You can go by ship, or by walking a long stair with maybe 600 steps(l'escala del cabirol: bambi stair, in catalan). Very spectacular. Not always is affordable because the boat don't go when there's bad see, and if it is very bad, you can't go also by stair. The inside is very spectacular. The stalagmites and stalactites are very big.

The tour company we were traveling with had several arranged but we chose two of them. The first was a half day trip to Castelsardo, on the North coast of the island.
Our journey took us inland a bit and we drove past small farms with hedges of cactus and agave. The ground was just starting to turn green again from the autumn rains and there were a lot of sheep. We also passed the Sella e Mosca winery - the largest one in Sardinia. We drove through the town of Porto Torres and saw Turis Libisonis, a Roman structure and also saw a bridge built by the Romans. Nearby was an Aragonese tower. Further on we stopped to look at a strangely formed rock which was just at the side of the road. During the Nuraghic period (Iron Age), the local people had carved tombs in the rock and it was covered in smallish square holes. Nearby was the town associated with the tomb and there was a tower next to it.
Organised tours like this are not everyone's cup of tea but for us, with only a week on the island and because it was our first time there, we found it a nice way to see some of the sites.

In and around Alghero theres loads to do :
- Beaches, there are plenty of fantastic beaches in this area, some very deserted. The best include Porto Conte, La Pelosa, Porto Ferro and Bosa. You'll need a car to access all these beaches easily.
- Good drives, obviously you'll need a car to enjoy a good drive but there are plenty. The drive from Alghero to Bosa is stunning, the road hugs the cliffs with beutiful beaches around each bend. The drive from Alghero up to Stintino is very nice through a plain wilderness and then to a rugged coastline.
- Alghero, walking around Alghero for an afternoon or day is very pleasant. Its got some very old buildings and narrow winding streets.
-Sunset at Capo Caccio, this is a must! Capo Caccio is a stunning cape about half hour from Alghero. They have a famous grotto here,Grotto Nettuna. The sunset from the cliffs is beautiful.
Lago Baratz - a big lake not far from Stintino in heavy woodland, nice scenery around
